out west
Won’t the first time
PSA all over again

(RIP PHX)
As much as I suspect you might like that to be true...

Press Release said:
In a letter to employees US Airways Chairman and CEO Doug Parker outlined the changes, “Today we are announcing a realignment intended to focus on our key network strengths at our hubs in Charlotte, Philadelphia and Phoenix, our focus city at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and our Shuttle service.
Aw shucks, looks like the heart of the West lives to beat another day. Very unfair of corp to deny you your long-awaited satisfaction. Maybe next time, eh? Not to worry though, you know what happens every time US retreats to the East coast: they merge with another entity out West. Rinse, repeat, etc.

Welp, while you're all busy patting one another on the back toasting the loss of West jobs (though realize this also means a loss of IAM dues  ) I've got some ramping to do. Word on the street is mainline is taking over some express (Mesa) function in PHX, which means a small but welcome increase in jobs at our humble little hub.

If you get some jobs out of this then that's good news. I have nothing against PHX.

"UAL chief sees new route to airline mergers"

Glenn Tilton told the Financial Times that consolidation should still play a role in shaping the US aviation industry’s future, adding that balance sheets had “probably†improved enough to help finance prospective merger plans. “There is still too much capacity in the US market,†he said.

The industry may now have the means to pay for the 12-18 months of integration airlines typically endure before the benefits of a merger kick in, Mr Tilton said. “To build a bridge to the synergies, you’ve got to have a chequebook,†he said.

Hence the financing for " Cash "

Its only matter of when....not If...

Yes, so highly you speak of my coworkers and myself.

We're not getting any jobs "out of this", it's a modest operational shift in PHX that's been in the works for a few weeks now. That's it. If anything we'd be able to accommodate more transfers facing furlough.

This was very interesting,LCC can only hope for a merger.
I am afraid it will be CO and UA. As Tilton eluded to in the above article.

Off topic post removed. That issue can be discussed in the Water Cooler. Lets get back on US Fleet Service issues.

I'm very angry with the company sick policy . Last night I had to work with some one who was running a fever & had other flu symptoms. I asked why she was working & her reply was that due to the sick policy she was scared to call in & risk being written up given points & loosing her job.

THIS NONSENSE HAS TO STOP NOW. I don't want to get sick. Corp. WAKE UP & have compassion.

Unfortunately compassion isn't profitable so it was cut from the operating budget some time ago. I don't see how they think they're doing themselves a big favor with this, what with them having to shell out cash defending it in arbitration and having to supply funding for all the grievance hearings that are accumulating because of it.

But what to do besides fume and moan? What to do...

Anybody have any ideas?

Arbitration cost approximately $3,500 per side, do you think the company cares about shelling out that and getting a 50% chance on screwing you?

Maybe someone needs to contact the news media and tell them whats going on.

That sounds rather inexpensive for a several months-long labor arbitration; I doubt anyone's getting pro bono legal counsel on this matter. I'm not sure what the figures are exactly but considering the many many individual cases lined up awaiting the third stage of the grievance process, all requiring $$$ from the company and union to be heard I'd have to imagine the total cost is a little more than the figure you've provided.

Having done arbitration cases and contract negotiations, I guess you dont release the company has its own labor attorneys in labor relations on staff, sometimes the company uses outside counsel, but for the most part its all done in-house.

Each side pays around $3,500 per arbitration case, that is a fact and cases dont last for months, they are usually done in one day and the longest is three to five days.

You guessed correctly. No, I have never done arbitration or contract negotiations. Dirty business. I guess I never thought about (cared) whether the swine were in-house or contracted.

So when I hear that PHX has 100+ cases awaiting arbitration (100 x $3,500), the company considers a $350,000 payout for one hub well worth it to maintain a craptacular attendance/disciplinary policy? No, seriously, I'm asking.

And so also whereas arbitration may take 1-5 days it can take several months to actually make it to a hearing? Because it was months and months ago that we were told that the attendance policy proper was going into expedited arbitration and yet nothing seems to come of that or nothing's come of it yet...why is this? Is it even true? No one knows.
