Whatever is on the aircraft at that time is should be what is said. If we are going to go to China and beyond it will keep confusion down and safety high. Safety should be the deciding factor

I don't understand why anyone wants to change it to CACTUS? This is not a small time airline anymore -- it is TRYING to fly with the big boys -- the likes of United, American, Continental, Delta, Northwest -- and ALL of those airlines have their own name as a callsign. My only suggestion -- change it USAIRWAYS. That's it -- add the ways, and be done with it.

Who the hell really cares? With all the things to concern ourselves with.

As was said above, "new" call signs can only be two syllables. "US Air" was grandfathered in so it can stay, but a new call sign has to be two syllables.

But as I said, who the hell cares what pilots have to call in? The folks in the back of the plane paying for tickets care about the quality of the product, not some stupid spat between east and west.

The product is un flyable so arguing about what pilots identify themselves is so far down on the list we shouldn't even be having this conversation.

Kettlecar?
(ok, three syllables, maybe ICAO will the US replace one three syllable call sign with another). As I recall, the ICAO standard for new callsigns is a guideline, not a firm rule)

what does a call sign have to do with "flying with the big boys"?

They all have names worthy of international carriers, unlike choosing call signs like prickly pear, desert rat, sand dunes, you get the idea.

There are a few call signs out there that might surprise you.

Ever hear "Dynasty", "Springbok", "Giant", "Shamrock", "Clipper?"

Cactus is two short syllables and distinctive. Just what you need when flying where the controllers have limited fluency in the international language of aviation: English. I think it will work just fine.

Of course, I was happiest when the call sign was "PSA!"

That is pretty sad if it takes a callsign on the radio to make you feel worthwhile of your position in the industry.

I know I'm going to get flamed for this but I think we should retire Cactus as the call sign and keep your fond memories of it as I do the Speedbird, and Smiley.

All the majors' call signs are their corporate names and I think we should do the same.

Keep USAir. :D
Just rename the callsign to "PITBULL"! It seems the East would be finally happy with something.
