Not sure why people are so surprised. Unions consist of people. People, for the most part are looking out for their own interest (since unions and companies obviously are not). For them to turn on their own is no more surprising than for a company to turn on it's own.

What a ridiculous conclusion! "Read a history book"...you might be referencing a selective history book. LOL
The history of labor unions in 20th century USA would suggest that you've deleted quite a bit. I will also suggest that you don't understand the principles of the labor movement present day. It's my firm belief that stress placed on union employment has been increased by outsourcing, globalization and illegal immigration. This is where good people have to stand tall and not add to the problems forementioned.
Under any conditions there is never a valid excuse for crossing a picket line.
