So being a union member means being unaccountable?

Look at the example your union & company leadership sets for the membership on accountability.   The accountability ship has sailed.  Here's a tip, worry about your own assigned work.  Evidently, enough work is getting done to keep the company in business - despite your claims to the contrary.

OldGuy@AA,
Not very union like when some union brothers and sisters damage our reputation when they defend sleeping, playing video games, and watching movies.
Funny but I have not seen anyone defend sleeping or any of the other things you mention.  I have seen you accuse people of this though.  You claim to be a union man but you throw other members under the bus on a public forum.  If people are doing what you say they are then it is up to management to deal with it.  It is not up to you.  I try to be accountable for myself and don't worry about others.  It's not my job to worry about what the other guy is doing or not doing.

Funny, I guess you have not read the posts about JFK/LGA sleepers, AUS sleepers, MIA sleepers, etc... you need to check out the arbitration dockets and read all the cases that have been taken forward by the locals. How many thousands of dollars of union dues were spent protecting these sleeping beauties that could have been spent better on getting us a good contract with the wages we both desire?

Think about...not your job to worry about what the other guy is doing? It is when it is taking dollars out of your wallet.

How dare you expect an employee to stay awake an entire 8 hours at WORK! Overspeed you have gone too far!!!!!!!

I've never seen a mech messed with for falling asleep while on lunch reading a magazine. :)

But I have seen them messed with snoring laid out on bench (day shift) in full view of managers walking by. It seems like the mechs that get messed with are the chronic sleepers or the guy that can't be found, no pity for those guys.

No, it is not.

Your post speaks volumes about your character.

You know management is always looking for new peeps.  Since you seem to lean more that way, maybe you should consider crossing over.  That is, if you haven't already.

Vortilon,
So your belief is unions exist to protect behavior that most on the outside find objectionable. This undermines the union's ability to obtain top notch wages and benefits because the union is protecting the individuals (IGM'ers) who are actually bringing all of us collectively down. Time to wake up and understand if we want to be treated like professionals, those that undermine us as professionals are stealing money out of your pocket.

I beg to differ, as it's tulsa that accepts substandard contracts, its tulsa that accepts OSMs, its tulsa that voted in this current contract that gave us 5.5% match to 401k, while FAs are getting 9.9% contribution and the pilots a 17% contribution, all the while losing everything left in the contract. Including OH to China.......No it's not some slacker sleeping, as thats a failure of management not to do away with the dead weight. There is nothing in our contract or constitution about self policing.

i find it interesting you have this view since the TWU spends more time and effort representing problem children then promoting our profession.

When your collective bargaining agent promotes fear and sells concessions through fear is it really Tulsa that's accepting the turd deals or is it the bargaining agent that bears the blame? When a single unaccountable individual  (Jim Little) stands between a corporation and a contract between its employees worth hundreds of millions of dollars you have to wonder what goes on behind the scenes.  Tulsa doesn't bring back deals that divide, your bargaining agent does.

Back when unions were real, management didn't get involved...There was "self policing" and the guys who didn't carry their weight were gone pretty quickly (so they could heal from their two broken legs).

Those days are gone.  In fact, even talking about threats against other employees could land you in hot water.  One has to wonder what Overspeed's sudden fascination is - with employee productivity.  As if that would be the reason we are not paid more.

Now Overspeed wants the TWU to make our profession better?  My fellow AMTs, I ask you - who has done more damage to our profession than the TWU?  The TWU put us back to the stone age in pay and benefits in 2003.  No snap backs - what kind of moron (Jim Little) accepts that?  Now, with the current negotiating structure, AA's AMTs are poised to get fleeced again.  What with 6 or 7 FSC local presidents sitting in on AMT negotiations - what could go wrong?  Yeah, just gives us all in the line maintenance side -  the warm fuzzies.
