pit base closes

All because 'the market is not there'.

The market is there for Jet Blue to BOS and JFK. The market is there for Southwest to Florida.

This was a decision made before the facts, and actions (or inactions) made to justify the decision.

The spreadsheet must contain a "Market is there?" column... that justifies the decision.

So here is what I don't get.

As unfortunate as these things are, they happen every day in this country. It has become standard operting procedure for corporate america to pull stunts like this. Again - not saying it is the correct way to do things, but it happens and has become a fact of life of working in this country.

But, at least many of the folks in PIT still have an opportunity to work for US in other locations if they so choose. THat is far more than people get in these instances in many other industries.

In most cases, when a company closes a location, keeping your job, even at a different location, is not an option, everyone that works at that location is kicked to the curb and sent packing.

US Airways hasn't been managed as a stand-alone entity for ten years. After Wolf came in and polished it up, the company was on a roll and expansion was promised with "more airplanes than God can count'! Yet he really didn't want to operate an airline, just make a quick buck by selling one. Nothing has changed, they have been trying to flip US this whole time. They finally got a buyer who also bought the unit next door and is now trying to flip both of them. PIT could be operated as a hub by someone who is serious about running an airline. Many companies pulled operations out of PIT after the flights were reduced. Cities like CLT and PHX are growing because they have an airport with non-stop flights to many destinations. The PIT politicians are also to blame. In an attempt to get more revenue for the city, they raised U's costs to get more $$ per passenger, rather than encouraging U to bring more passengers through PIT. As others have noted, this is probably not the end. Parker is an M&A guy, not a builder. The company will be right-sized until it is merged. It's all about money for the stockholders, nothing for the customers or employees. A company can make money by: 1) Providing customers with value for their money or 2) Selling itself.
Viewing the past two years, which path do you think Tempe is pursuing?

Not true. Costs stayed the same. Lease costs are the same for all airlines. The only difference being that rates for long-term leases are less than month to month rent for gate space. What U paid per passenger went up because less passengers were using U's leased space. U abrogated its leases for the entire airport, entered into long-term leases for 10 gates and leased the remainder at higher rates. If the airline is unprofitable here it is most likely because it leased more space than it really needed, and didn't streamline its employee base to cover both mainline and regionals.

If, as U previously stated, they abandoned the hub and "right-sized" Pittsburgh for point-to-point flying, then their costs per passenger were on par with every other airline originating passengers here and could be passed along to the consumer.

And, I'd like to see the backup for the $40 million dollar loss. That's pretty significant given last week's claim that Pittsburgh is marginally unprofitable. By my calculations, that is about 10% of their operating profit.

With regard to what politicians did and U costs, see posts in this forum: Flying Away / It's Time To Stop Counting On Us Air

Right on again---we actually do have more and more people on here that are truly understanding just how bad this management is.....

Again as I have stated here before this was all brought up before with this management and directly with Doug Parker that to make money you first must have your own house in order....

Running two separate operations with as small as they had become and paying short-term lease rates on 17-20 gates and almost 500 employees to operate express flights equals big-money....

People, this is 1st grade math stuff that anyone could see----it was as plain as the nose on your face, yet Doug ignored the committee and continued his onslaught of feeder flight cuts for almost 2 years..

So don't think for 1 min. that this management actually has made an intelligent decision here......Hell, when the committee met with Doug and Company PIT still sat with 220 flights per day...

My condolences to all PIT based employees, I'll try to come up to Pittsburgh some time and talk to the old timers there that I know.

I'm hoping to actually see DCA expand it's flight schedules w/ more mainline flights (good for non-revs). However after realizing US closed Pittsburgh I won't be applying for a "career" with US Airways...Heck even Mule was correct...This is a job not a career at the "America Worst" helm.

I am sure I'm going to be flamed unmercifly for this suggestion..............but..............here goes anyway.... Would this not be a good time to open an "EAST Coast Metal Base" in PHX in light of the PIT closure? We already have TONS of PHX overnights. This would help balance the bases towards equilibrium for those who live in the west. It would also give those that are based in PHX a bit of a 'heads up' as to what will go down when the two finally merge and maybe a head start as to where we all want to be once the dust has settled. This doesn't have to be just the F/A group, but to all those who have been displaced from PIT. I can't see the redundancy in shifting around only the bases on the East, and then have them reshift again at a later date.
Just my opinion......

Flame away!

usafa304- No flame from me. I think it's a great idea to look into. But so were satellite bases. It all falls on deaf ears.

I think it's a great idea. Open PHX now! Why shift PIT and have displacements in CLT and DCA when we can lessen the ripple-effect by letting those who have plans on going West, do it in January?

Oh....if only that silly little contract didnt stand in the way.......

THNX USCREW.

Not sure if the company is listening, but with all those transfers sitting to the west on someone's computer, this would be a perfect time to let the dam loose. For those of our brothers and sisters in the west, I'm sorry to say, this is going to happen eventually anyway...this will enable a bit of a visual as to what's going to go down, without it disrupting anyone's life in the immediate future. Believe me, I'm very sensitive as to what disrupts anyone's schedule and quality of life..but the fact of the matter is, we can't postpone the enevitable...I personally would like to have some kind of knowledge beforehand as to where all this would leave me so I could make alternate plans if I had to. Keep in mind, with the vaccuum OUT of PHL and CLT, that would also be a good barometer as to the true seniority in those bases as well.

This is Greek to a one base airline.

I totally agree...but it's time to give them the binocculars they need, perhaps in the form of an Xmas bonus!!
