New Call Sign

so is the 3 letter designator going to AWE then from USA?

I'd think, at least for national pride, seeing USAxxx will be missed :/

According to the letter announcing the change, the USA designator will be maintained. Which will further confuse the air traffic controllers. Especially the ones in Europe.

I think it is a shame the call sign is being changed!

Seriously .... what is the first thing that comes to mind when hearing the word "Cactus"??

This is not a good thing ... nor will it help morale, IMHO!

I think it's nonsensical. The majority of their aircraft are flying around with US Air as the callsign already... more pilots to retrain. It's an ego thing for the sand royalty. It's important that at least one bit of America West live on for all the pilots to face day in and day out...

If we're going hog wild on call signs, why not call it Piedmont...as long as we're delving into airlines of the past whose names have nothing to do with the current airline name

US will clearly demonstrate their regional small potatoes mentality by adopting Cactus as a call sign. Afterall the western US is about the only place US flies that have Cactii growing.

Yet the call sign "Speedbird" is ok for British Airways?

Has USAPA activated the CIRP to help Easties deal with this devastating news?

Piney Bob: dude, if you think something as insignificant as our callsign has anything to do with anything else you really don't understand this industry at all.

Exactly, Its just another great move for the company to bring us all together in harmony. The call sign should have been something different. They had the opportunity again to do something for better moral and failed.

Until we are all paid the same and are truly one company I will say whatever they want me to say.

Does it matter? Who cares what the callsign is, or the color of the aircraft, or the style of uniform. Unlike seniority, none of those things are important to trade unionism and because pilots don't get it, it is why unionist like the longshoremen working on the docks make more than pilots. The pilot profession ceased to be a trade union a long time ago and is shouldn't be any wonder why the job is in the toilet.

I still remember the day that the callsign switched from "Allegheny" to "USAir".

It was driving both the pilots and the air traffic controllers nuts, because the flights were still tagged "AL" on the ATC radar screens.

In keeping with FOM procedures, effective 9/01 I will start using the phraseology of Cactus, but identifying the livery, so as to minimize confusion. e.g. Cactus 2117, US Airways livery.....

Can't wait to see the flood of ASAP's over this one....

I don't know you'd have to consult BA.
Speedbird was the name of the BOAC logo (and their predecessor airline Imperial Airways, although the logo appeared on the nose of the aircraft at Imperial), so when ATC instituted callsigns they chose Speedbird as theirs. The merger of BOAC and British European Airlines formed BA, which kept the Speedbird callsign.

Of course, Speedbird became especially fitting when the Concorde entered service.

Looks more like keeping with the east mentality to me. You know the one, my way or the high way, and I'll stomp and kick and resort to all kinds of underhanded tactics if anything is not to my liking.

I think they're copying me :) I own an East Coast company named Solid Cactus. It should be interesting, first off, I'd say half the people who live on the East Coast can't spell cactus. They for some reason thing its cacus or catus. Is there a way I could change my forum name? Now everyone is going to really think I work at the sand castle...
