Really everyone, what difference does the call sign make ?

If you really care to know I'd like to chime in. I'm a 25 year controller, the last 17 at Boston Center. The problem is this: On my scope, and on my flight plan readouts, the callsign reads USA. I've been calling USA USAir for most of my career. Will I get used to it standing for Cactus? I'm sure I will. I just hope it's not YOUR flight that I call USAir when I issue a traffic alert and we lose valuable seconds in the confusion. All that needed to be done, from an enroute perspective, would be to change the flight plan from USA to AWE. Or, even better, come up with a new identifier for the merged airline and call it something new-or Cactus, if they had their hearts set on that callsign.

(The new callsign should be great fun for the international crews. It sems like all foreign countries think that all Americans are cowboys anyway-hey, now there's a good callsign "Cowboy".

For now I will continue to write USA IS CACTUS on my scope and insert "Cactus" into the radar data block scratchpad each time I plug in. Good luck to all of us. I hope this foolish issue doesn't cause a runway incursion or near mid-air.

I hope someone from Senior Flight Department management reads your post.

Sometimes people that fly desks have little appreciation for what their decisions translate to in the real world.

Thanks to you and all your fellow ATC professionals for doing your usual outstanding job in the face of poor aeronautical decision making.

And I will do my part and respond to either USAir or Cactus untill everyone gets past this learning curve.

Correct me if I'm wrong but just before they closed all the west coast PSA bases, the company made a big deal about the three way trade they had done with Muse Air (MAC), Military Airlift Command-MAC (USA) and USAir (ALG) to swap for the USA identifier. They at least had a forward looking business plan with high hopes for Europe and beyond.

Now, like everything else associated with this company, we've retreated back to our regional roots (and routes) and returned to the 70's way of thinking.

Maybe Retro Air should be considered for a new call sign.

From USAPA Safety Committee Chairman...

The Company will be changing our ATC designator to "AWE" from "USA" effective September 19th. "AWE" has always been associated with the "Cactus" call sign. This change is meant to mitigate the confusion among the controllers who are used to pairing the "USA" designator with the "US Air" call sign. Please continue to remain vigilant and focused as we all adjust to this call sign change.

Next Moves...change stock symbol from LCC (didn't make much sense anyway) to AWE. Then, what the hey, let's change the name of the company back to America West. After all, the headquarters is in the western U.S.

It's like Chevron buying Texaco and changing the name of the merged company to ChevronTexaco. That lasted about 2 years then the company became just Chevron again.
