I would love to see the swoosh stay. Actually the entire paint job of US is very nice. I always hated the logo though. The flag, so simplified, looks too cheap as a company logo. It took away from it all.
It would be great if they could come up with a paint job that contains elements of AWA, US Airways and American.
Also, it would be great to see the bottom of the plane with a logo or title, as this is gaining popularity internationally. No US Carrier has this feature so far: The old AA logo, because of it's symmetry would have fit nicely on a dark belly.

Right now that tail from American Airlines is still ugly as hell, and if it hasn't grown on me by now, it'll probably never. Same with the new UNITED branding and their CO merged logo, and even their website choice. Believe it or not, I abstain from flying UNITED now, because marketing-wise, they do not attract me. There is no more PRESTIGE in UNITED. Call me crazy for this being a factor in choosing an airline, but it truly is. United's branding choice has made them less attractive. I would rather fly Delta or Lufthansa or Continental (oh wait) they don't exist anymore. That's right.... the old CO was attractive with the exception of their website which sucked even back then; but, by UNITED just slapping their name on the CO planes and changing their fleet to this supposed new identity and going with the less effective CO website, I became less and less interested in them. Weird, isn't it? But then, maybe not so much after all. You wouldn't see me ever driving an American car 'cuz their all ugly as f... and their logo's and presentation have no prestige. But a Mercedes, BMW, Honda, Audi, or even Mitsubishi - sure, why not... they're cool.
AirBerlin has a great presentation, while I hated the logo at first, they did win me over with their paint scheme. Condor (or Thomas Cook if you will) on the other hand just changed their logo yet again to an incredibly silly and half a$$ modification - old Thomas Cook logo, basically a downgrade. The new logo makes you wonder what they were thinking.

Anyway you get the point. Overall presentation does affect how consumers will choose a product/service.
