Jim Little has sent a response to Delle today and has again invited him to the debate! And has requested the 3 rank and file members from Amfa to be in Tulsa next week!
Delle gave his response and indicated his willingness to debate, under mutaully agreeable terms once the election is announced. We dont see Kerry and Bush debating yet even though we know exactly when the election is going to take place, a debate now would be considered premature. The TWU is having a hard time dealing with such a concept as bilateralism, since they have been willing to accept the company's unilateral demands for concession for over twenty years they cant fathom the idea of real compromise.
Jim Little has said repeatedly " If any local wishes to have Me present to address the members feel free to ask" He will be glad to come!
Feel free to ask, it doesnt mean he will come.
The Debates are over after tomorrow! Delle has his last oppurtunity to stand up! If he refuses to show than that willl be it!
In other words My way or no way. I guess he feels that as ATD Director he can do that since he is not elected. OK so now we know, Little will not debate. So right before the ballotts go out, AMFA will simply hold a series of informational meetings. We know what the TWUs excuse will be already, "poor Jim is sick, so he cant debate, AMFA should have debated him when he was able". That strategy may have helped with the small group of dispatchers who likely knew Little personally but it may backfire with the thousands of mechanics who have never met Little. They may think "If he is too sick to debate, then how can he fight for me against the company"?
The fact is that Delles response was valid and made sense. The election process really has two stages of membership participation, the cards and the vote. The first series of debates was for the card collection process. Both parties chose not to debate although they both made unilateral offers. The TWU, while decilining the invitation by AMFA however did try to disrupt the AMFA meeting with a rediculous display and by verbally assualting those who chose to go in and hear what AMFA had to say. The AMFA did not stoop to such low level tactics during the TWUs informational meeting. The object of the parties was to either convince members not to call for a vote or to call for a vote. That process is complete and the cards were filed, the process is now in the determination phase where the NMB decides whether or not there will be an election. A debate at this time serves no purpose. The next phase once determination takes place will either be an election or a return to the card drive. Once the election is announced then the debates should be scheduled, it just makes sense.
