I just finished watching the Wednesday WH press conference... Both the people you mentioned went on the say they don't expect it to be worse in terms of numbers hospitalized/infected/dead.
If the two studies out of California are correct on >10x as many more people with immunities than cases reported, then herd immunity is going to set in as it did with H1N1 and does with just about every other viral issue...
Some D's are indeed elated with a meltdown of the economy because that was by far the strongest selling point for Trump over the past 3.5 years. Their problem is that after 3.5 years, they still haven't figured out that Trump hits back harder and doesn't fold under attack like Romney and McCain did.
