Winter 2006/07 Schedule Changes

American's December schedule continues the airline's steady increase in flights from Columbus with an additional flight to Boston. Flight 4550 will leave at 11:30AM (within 25 mins of jetBlue's BOS flight), and will be flown with an ER3. With the additional flight, American and American Eagle will have 32 flights every weekday from CMH:

ORD: 4x CR7, 5x ER4, 2x ERD
STL: 3x ERD
DFW: 4x M80, 1x ER4
BOS: 1x ERD, 2x ER3
LGA: 3x ERD, 4x ER3
RDU: 2x ERD
MIA: 1x ERD

I've often wondered, what is the BIG attraction with CMH ?

I mean, CLE and CVG are Ohio's BIG DOGS.

I also remember that a lot of airlines, over the years, have tried to make CMH a hub.

seems the ORD cut-back continues (from certain markets anyway). BDL-ORD goes from 6X ER4 to 5X ERD - the rest of the BDL schedule remains unchanged as of now...

I've often wondered, what is the BIG attraction with CMH ?

As far as American is concerned, the Eagle maintenance hub definitely has to be a big draw. I would assume it is much easier for Eagle to cycle ERJs in for maintenance with scheduled service to several cities from CMH. In addition, the lack of any true dominant carrier, especially after America West closed their hub in CMH, has allowed AA to expand their Columbus operation quite nicely.

I mean, CLE and CVG are Ohio's BIG DOGS.

Historically, yes, the cities Cleveland and Cincinnati have always been the "big dogs" in Ohio. However, in recent years Columbus has risen to Cleveland and Cincinnati's rank in many areas and, in some cases, has surpassed them. Columbus' significant white collar workforce compared to the traditionally blue collar workforces in Cleveland and Cincinnati is reason alone to take a closer look at the Capital City.

I also remember that a lot of airlines, over the years, have tried to make CMH a hub.

TWA and America West are the most recent carriers to attempt a hub operation at Port Columbus, with the latter being the one with the most success. America West's decision to close the CMH hub wasn't so much due to lack of demand, but moreso the inability and the lack of interest in making it work. CMH actually has service to more destinations now than during HP's hub days, and passenger numbers have rebounded close to the levels seen during the hub's existance.

to echo 905, keep in mind that CMH also has a larger population. What they never had was the corporate base that CLE/CVG had/have. With the population there however, there's bound to be demand to somewhere. Lastly, RJ's have made a lot of this possible. If you're AA with a hub in ORD, CMH customers never really thought of you as a carrier for Eastbound service. "Focus cities" like this, give AA, and others, opportunities to get new revenue into the system as opposed to spreading existing revenue to a fourth service or something of that nature...

Regarding CMH, Look at how well Delta does with CMH as a focus city for them. With CVG as a major hub just a 2 hr drive away CMH still gets non-stops to: LAX,TPA,MCO,FLL,RSW,ATL,CVG,BDL,BOS,LGA,JFK,DCA,AND SLC. Most of this service is with regional jets but still it seems as though there is plenty of demand. It will be interesting to see how Skybus does and if AA, DL or WN start any additional flights to compete with this new carrier.

Skybus? I hope you don't believe that airline is ever going to actually start flying. It's not getting off the ground, ever.

Also, as mentioned, while CLE and CVG areas might be bigger, Colombus is a much more white collar city, and in terms of business traffic, it offers just as much, if not more, than the other Ohio cities.

I think you are probably right. They have however alot of money being thrown their way. How long they stay aloft if they do start up is another question.

CMH, lower fare overall compared to Cincinnati and Cleveland thanks to landing fees and other add ons.
CMH, Chautauqua Airlines maintenance hub. Granted its Embraer 145s but with American, Delta, United and US Airways all using Chautauqua aircraft that is a major chunk of the flights out of CMH. They also support two c-check lines in CMH. So thats at least twenty overnight line birds and two c-checks in CMH.
CMH, home to Huntington Bank, Nationwide Insurance, Wendys, Battelle, Honda, the DSCC....the list goes on, and don't forget the five university campuses within the central Ohio area. Thats a lot of professors AND students.
Oh yeah, don't forget that it's the state capitol.
All we need is a beach and we're set

Thanx to everyone, for enlightening me about CMH !!!
