Tulsa will be gone by February 2014

Another option not mentioned... NewCo approaches Fort Worth to renegotiate AFW's lease terms, and AFW gets a reprieve.

maybe AFW is an option but there are probably now more locations in the US that could serve as maintenance facilities than there is a need by US airlines.

Nonetheless, the focus should be on making sure TUL remains open not just in two years but for a whole long time in the future.

I also will strongly bet that TUL and the state of OK will pony up some major concessions to keep AA in TUL.... the impact of losing the TUL base would be enormous to TUL and OK.

Funny how Corporate Welfare has become the norm and expected.

true... but it is also pragmatism. TUL and OK can spend a fairly small amount of money or lose far more.

If someone wants to provide an address and account number, I'll send a donation to ensure that the TUL base stays in TUL...

The main reason IND got closed instead of SFO was resale value. IMC had potential buyers, SFO didn't.

Same situation at TUL and AFW.

Not really. IIRC Indy was abandoned by UA as it had favorable lease options in its contract. Indianapolis and Indiana provided over $300 Million to lure UA and after they left Indy stayed empty for years. Now AAR has a pretty sizable presence but that is recent history.

SFO has the landing gear, jet shop and component maintenance that they just couldn't dump in an instant (although much component maintenance is now outsourced).

Also keep in mind that after 75 years at SFO, it is considered a 'Super Fund' site that has chemical contamination down to 30 feet. Before UA could dump SFO, they would have to clean it up.

I was in Winston-Salem, NC last week, it was a shame to see another company's name on the old Piedmont/US Airways landing gear shop and plating shop.

AA borrowed $650 million against AFW, and would have to pay that back to I believe Fort Worth, in order to keep AFW after BK. So you see, the TWU didn't really save Tulsa, it was the chamber of commerce that saved Tulsa and the fact that AA could borrow money against AFW. Unless Pittsburgh can beet Tulsa in tax incentives. Who is Parker going to pick to layoff? USair mechs at PIT or AA mechs at TUL, and what did AA do to the TWA mechs at MCI?

I'm sure the decision won't be made by personal feelings or loyalty, but on what is the better decision financially over the long haul or whatever the living arrangement of the wife of the executive wants.

Probably truer than we would all like to believe... :p :p

That would explain the move of UA HQ to down town Chicago.
77 West Wacker Drive, how convenient is that?
LOL :p :p

As 700 posted, the US PIT Mtc facility isn't large enough to handle the increased work that is being done in TUL. Given the current US operation, PIT makes very little sense to keep even now. I realize that contractualy US is required to keep it, but once that changes the end will be near. I mean no offense to those that work there, or the quality of their operation, but keeping it there no longer makes sense.

Ya downtown Chicago (not known for cheap taxes) and not easy to commute to everyday or a suburb of Chicago?

Rejuvenated Pittsburgh or Tulsa? Isn't Pittsburgh a focus city also? Meaning that a plane has a reason to fly to PIT unlike TUL.

???

You would be surprised at the amount of bsuiness between DFW, ORD, and TUL, and it's not ferry flights to get planes to maintenance shops. And, the passengers are not all non-revs--in fact the last time I worked DFW-TUL, there were something like 20 non-revs on the standby list (last flight of the day. Some of them had rolled over several flights trying to get on.) None of them got accommodated. All revenue passengers.

You do know that there is still a booming oil business in Oklahoma, and a number of the major oil companies have offices in Tulsa. Not as many as there used to be, but...

I certainly didn't mean to insult TUL and their 2 AA destinations, and I agree that TULE will mostly likely not close, but with base maint. shrinking by 50% by 2017 (according to the TWU). Maybe Tulsa isn't secure as it has been in years past, and we are now under the USair/America West management. Who knows which cities will give the best incentive package to the New AA management. could be PHX, PIT, Charllette, TUL, even DWH (looks like a lot of room for expansion at DFW). My money is on the politicians from OK, nobody is better at giving corporate welfare then a "conservative".

There is NO UNION workplace in the History of AA, that D E S E R V E S to get HURT ($$$$)more than TULSA, due to the Lack of BALLS by the Majority of so-called Union Men.
AND if TUL shuts Down, I'll 'Party like it's 1999' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BUT,
Just as EQUAL, I'll PRAY LIKE HELLL for Every M A N....in TUL,..Who Always stood tall against the TWU/AA (same ####) during Every new contract !!!!

I agree with you 700. PIT work gets moved to TUL in 1 year after merger.
So much for that IAM protected stations BS language in the CBA. (only protects the last 15 guys in station, just enough to run one shift but don't worry your in a IAM PROTECTED STATION.) Sounds good till they start cutting heads and relocating your butt and the words you are not on lay off just relocated does not help you feel any better or help selling your house and the cost of moving.
