Rumors from local 514

No harm no foul.  I do understand your point now.
Actually, I think he was directing it to ME and my coworkers here in PIT.  And you know something?  He is completely right.

The guys around here are either too scared, haven't read, or haven't been told what to think by their company or union masters.  Ask a majority of guys around here, and they don't even know TULE exists.

This is a big IAM station and a big supporter of the alliance.  And if the alliance goes through, I would be almost sure to guess that the JCBA will not include PIT as one of the Overhaul bases, and you'll see the work go to TUL.  Thank heavens that there is a small pocket of AMFA supporters here too.

We just lost 53 guys and one track of work.  And the guys around here are just so happy now that all this overtime is being called.  "What 53 guys?"  "They would have got rid of them anyways".  That's the type of mentality in this big IAM station.

Thursdays are IAM red T-shirt days.  It makes me want to puke.  I wonder how many red T-shirts I'll see on the first Thursday after they announce that the work is going away due to the alliance?

Working O/T after 53 were released?  Really?  So let me get this straight.  53 were let go, and now because of the 53 gone they realized they are running too thin and call all kinds of O/T and the guys are accepting it?   My question is, were they calling for the O/T prior to the release of 53 in PIT?  Or did the numbers increase in the O/T call out after they were released?  If so your right, your station is all about "I got mine" fan club, so sorry to hear that and the company loves those kind.  Hey, try wearing an AMFA shirt on Thursdays and pass out cards, cuz if you guys don't change unions and continue on with this alliance crap you will be held at the bottom of the industry as you are now.   And no I am not saying changing unions will put you at the top at first contract, pretty sure everyone knows that.  You guys have years upon years of losses that need to be brought back and then some, it will take a little time...

You act like you are shocked...In my experience, in my work group anyway, anytime there was a layoff and a shortage of heads, there was ALWAYS enough folks to sign up for overtime and cover the shortage. This is nothing new swamt.

Well, let me clarify a little.  Yes I would be a little shocked if there were no O/T being called prior to the 53 being released, laid off or fired.  And then all of a sudden they were calling all kinds of O/T after the fact.  Other than that, no.  No shock factor.  Just tired of hearing of these "I got mine" stories, very sad...

Sorry Real tired but it is whats holding us back, We must get rid of the IAM and now the TAG TEAM IAM/TWU or we will never pull our self's out of the bottom and each year the gap gets larger, As it is we are  from 15K to 25K behind our brothers at other airlines.
Have a happy AMFA DAY..

There hasn't been growth in decades but even without growth there is still a demand for replacements. So the growth figure doesn't concern me. many mature industries see minimal growth but still require a constant stream of new workers to replace those that leave, my point is the stream has slowed down to a trickle. They can offer free training but that still won't change things, most who are unemployed are unemployed for a reason, and would likely be a little intimidated by having to put their name on their work and know that if they did anything wrong they are liable. As an AA worker you had the option to become an aircraft mechanic for free because AA was offering that for a number of years, even partnered with a school in Chicago and AA continues to partner with schools in NY and MIA, probably more, heard they were in Denver telling the kids in a school there what a great future they have ahead of them (1 week of VC, no holidays, no night shift premium, no pension) Not every mechanic from MROs look to go to the airlines, many stay at the MRO because of things like weekends and Holidays off, cheap cost of living and simply because they don't want change.
I can honestly say I hope you are right Bob and I am wrong. I guess we will see in the next five years or so.

You have pretty much nailed how it is in Tulsa also.

Oh, no.

If that is the case, we as a combined group, have a long, hard climb.

And yes, there was hardly any OT pre-layoff, and now your "buddy" will kill you over it.

It's not everywhere or everyone, but it's the majority around here in PIT, the "eye" of the IAM.

I will do you one better. Some years ago the company suspended about 30-40 guys in cabin service (remember them?). While these people were out of service the rest of the guys were tripping over each other to work OT. One of them was a future section chairman! The rationale was "oh we weren't happy why we were getting it, we were just happy to get it". This was one of many incidents that showed me I was truly working non union. Most of the rank and file in my station wouldn't know how to be union men if you drew them a diagram.

How many mechs are still on the recall list for DFW? I hear that dfw runs on OT?

That happened at NWA/DTW under The AMFA. The company offered OT to all. Nobody accepted. NOBODY.

They then used forced OT from the bottom of the list. Very productive overtime. The guys were ragged.

I know that's the craziest stupid thing. In hangar 1&2 OT is plentiful. I work weekend 4/10 crew and we sit around with nothing to do while the OT guys get the jobs. Then offer us OT on our days off then our guys sit around with nothing to do. How is this place is going to survive with this clueless management team I'll never know

Depending where you work, OT can come and go in cycles.

I must admit that I see more angry people all the time though.  Many finally realized that medical premiums are going up and will eat up every bit of the little raise they got last week.  The light is finally going on for some.  Hopefully it will spread.
