Another School Massacre

I'll willingly surrender my guns the very day the Presidential Security detail surrenders theirs!

The Dendermonde nursery attack was a stabbing attack on the Fabeltjesland daycare centre in the village of Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde in Dendermonde, Belgium, at 10:00 a.m. CET (9:00 a.m. UTC) on 23 January 2009. Three people were stabbed to death, and twelve were mutilated in the attack.
The suspect has been linked to a separate murder of an elderly lady and police have suggested he was plotting more nursery attacks. The daycare centre involved in the initial attack is expected never to reopen. Italian singer Luciano Ligabue dedicated to the victims a song, Quando mi vieni a prendere? (Dendermonde 23/01/09) inserted in his 2010 album, Arrivederci, Mostro!
Attack
Kim De Gelder, a 20 year-old Belgian from Sinaai, entered the Fabeltjesland nursery, located in Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde in Dendermonde, Belgium, through an unlocked side door, claiming he had a question. He then entered one of the rooms and began attacking small children before moving up some stairs, where he continued in another room.
The man was reported to be wearing black and white makeup with his hair vividly coloured in red, similar to that of The Joker. De Gelder's attorney, Jaak Haentjens, later formally denied any link to "the Joker", attributing the claims of face paint to De Gelder's pale skin. Kim De Gelder was, in eyes of his friends and colleagues, a silent boy, who never said anything.
A total of eighteen infants under the age of three and six adults were in the nursery at the time of the attack. Two infants and one adult were killed six children, between one and three years old, were seriously injured, another four suffered minor injuries and nine escaped unscathed. The alleged perpetrator left the scene on his bike.
Victims
  • Leon Garcia-Mannaert, a nine-month old boy,
  • Corneel Vermeir, a nine-month old boy,
  • Marita Blindeman, a 54-year-old child minder.
Initial reports on Belgian television suggested that five people had been killed and twenty had been injured, with government officials only confirming the death of one adult and one child. This number was later increased, as another infant had died from the injuries he had sustained. It has also been reported that some of the surviving children have needed plastic surgery due to serious mutilations.

So the Sandy Hook kids were trying to take Lanza's guns away?

No! What it means is you made the second dumbest post I've ever read.

The price of Freedom is risk. Government can't and shouldn't attempt to regulate our lives on a minute by minute basis. When you allow maximum liberty you exchange some level of perceived security for that Liberty.

In the Sandy Hook case you have what appears to have been a mildly autistic young man and a highly irresponsible parent as the root cause of the massacre. His weapon of choice was a gun. It could have been a stolen Ford Taurus, a car bomb but it wasn't.

The notion that by registering or confiscating weapons from people who obey the laws of the nation as a preventative medicine defies logic. Think about it. We're fighting several wars that were called "Preventative" in Iraq & Afghanistan/ To date what have they prevented? Nothing.

In a truly free society there will be crazies that will do heinous things with or without guns. I don't recall Mr Bundy or Mr Dahmer using a gun do you?

The answer lies in rigid enforcement of current laws, better security in schools (not armed guard). There is no cheaper deterrent then a locked door during school hours. Moe and continued training for school administrators and students. Cooperation with local law enforcement. There is no valid reason not to have a simple "panic button/bar" in every classroom that when activated calls the police and notifies the administrator who then implements the security plan. All police vehicles should have floor plans of schools readily available on their computers.

Liberty includes the right not to live in fear. Our kids have that right and as adults it's not our job to curtail liberty in exchange for perceived security. It is to preserve the Freedom and Liberty of ALL citizens of the Republic.

That has to be the dumbest analogy I have ever seen posted here.

Well, one kind could be used against rapists and carjackers. The could be used against burglars. And the last one WAS used to take out 20 kids in an Elementary school in Connecticut, 12 students and one teacher at a school in Colorado, and 12 moviegoers in Colorado just to name a few.

Are you in favor of highly armed personel in schools?

You tell me Dell, there are 99,000 public schools in the US. A CONSERVATIVE estimate of the pay and benefits for a police officer is about $50,000. Most likelyh it's more, but that's a very conservative estimate. Whipping out the old calculator shows me that putting highly armed personel in schools would cost $4,950,000,000 per year. Where do we get the money?

That's not what I asked you.

If we only had a President like Bush, we could create another TSA like agency to oversee school, movie theater, and mall security...

That's the price of Liberty KC. Frankly it's like DUI's. Can you stop them short of doing something ridiculous? NO, you can't! What you can do however is create an environment where they are less likely to occur. Which as a nation we've done a rather commendable job

The same approach is required in school shootings or any act of violence against another. Despite our efforts we still have around 8,000 alcohol related fatalities and no one wants to ban cars or alcohol. This as a society is deemed an acceptable risk in exchange for freedom of movement.

Unless and until we are serious about changing behavior we will have what for some people is unacceptable levels of inappropriate usage of guns. Confiscating them is not the answer and neither is the current status quo.
