I'll try to address some of issues that have been raised:
I said I had a lot of respect for SWA AMT's because they earn what they get paid. I've spent many years seeing some of our guys dragging their feet and when management was challenged, told us to leave them alone, they're doing a good job as long as the plane gets out in the morning. There’s no question managements part of the problem. It's been suggested on this board but you know that too if you work the floor and you're honest with yourself.
What I said about AMFA not recognizing Overhaul as being equal to Line Maintenance is true. If it wasn't for their needing more cards signed we wouldn't be having this conversation. You may not know it but in the current negotiations some Line Maint. Local President tried to segregate Line Maint from Overhaul by forcing them into a separate contract book. Regardless of what they may say now, when added to AMFA's history of lukewarm support for Overhaul, does that sound like we would be on an even playing field to you? It certainly doesn't to me. In fact, a Line Maint. President implied at a membership meeting recently that Overhaul tends to drag down Line Maintenance. Are you getting the picture? If you don't know that, you don't have a clue about what's really going on.
I know there are a variety of viewpoints among us based on our own personal experiences. I’m expressing mine after swinging wrenches for 40 years. Is everything perfect - of course not. Can it be improved - I believe it can, but not if the members are relying on someone like the AMFA to do the job for them. My past experience with AMFA has convinced me they can’t do a thing. The SWA contract was inherited and all they’ve done since then is keep extending it with a few adjustments such as outsourcing Maintenance to El Salvador (Southwest Airlines, the nation's leading discount carrier flying only domestic routes, has begun heavy maintenance of some of its Boeing 737 fleet in El Salvador, company executives said Thursday. Under agreements with its Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA), Southwest on Wednesday flew its first 737 to Aeroman, an El Salvador-based maintenance, repair and overhaul facility).
Also, there’s a little story about Alaska Airlines I could share with you but that can wait until another day.
Good luck to all of you. Fighting for our survival in Bankruptcy Court we’re going to need it.
As for Comatose and “Horton Hears A Who”, if you can’t say something intelligent, wait until you can.
