American looking to "right-size" the company and staffing levels for the Fall and 2021

25% of your pay, while another airline (southwest, i believe) is offering 50% of your pay for taking a voluntary leave...what a waste of cloud space by aa.

it should also be brought up to be clear, unlike aa's passion for vagueness...that the additional $600 a week unemployment from the feds could be allowed to expire at the end of july.

bottom line, if an aa employee took a 3 month voluntary leave in march and got approved for unemployment by their state..looks like they'll came out the best. more pay sitting at home, safer from the virus than those trudging into work everyday.
WN doesn't get 50% of their pay for a voluntary leave.... It's 25%.

HMMMM.
They saw the low turn out I bet, didn't they?
A lot had to do with the covid appearing within various workgroups. The union and it's members have requested this as well as the company trying to pocket/save some of the federal money that runs out in October.

Southwest is offering leaves of a minimum of six months with benefits and 50% pay for most employees, excluding pilots, who would receive about 61% pay.

The maximum leave period varies, and the airline said it "may return employees to work earlier if needed for operational needs."

Just to be clear, the federal unemployment payments end on July 31 and it's not a rolling 3 months of eligibility. So, if you apply now, no more $600.00 payments will come after July 31. A few people that I've talked to, thought that you can get 3 months of payments by the feds as long as you apply before July 31. Not the case.

that's why i said those that took 3 month leaves in march, will come out the best.

in my state - $484 a week from state, $600 a week from feds and good 'ole AA also chipping in with 25% of your pay.

hmmm..add it all up and they are earning more than someone working 40 hrs a week and dealing with the virus at work.

scam-demic.

Yes that is true.

However they downside is they are burning their unemployment up BEFORE they actually get laid off.

i believe the WARN act is state-specific. my state says that any employer with 75 or more FT employees (regardless of PT number) must give a 60 day notice of mass layoffs.

WARN Act is Federal law. Some states do have stricter requirements that have to be applied.

you're right. a few had brought this up a couple of months ago.

i know of one person who did this with more time than me and a bunch with close to 30 years and a handful of 20 year people. all of them are PT, except for 1 person.

those that took a 3 month leave - they made out because there is no guarantee the extra $600 week from the feds will be extended past july.

in april, i went to mngt. and asked them if i could apply for a 3 month voluntary leave and what were my chances of getting unemployment. i was told by mngt. that chances are they will have to pay the state back due to taking a voluntary leave. knowing my state, i don't believe that will happen. my state is the worst of all 50 in getting their money back in cases of overpaying unemployment benefits.

i go back to the company with it's vague 'aa will not contest any unemployment filing' and the feeling that only scammers thrive in chaos. no set rules, no leadership, nothing in black and white from aa. aa left the door open, some did their homework/got some very good advice and took the leave.

others got no advice at all. most believed that no way would someone get unemployment for taking a voluntary leave. kudos to those that took a 3 month leave, they gamed the system.

most of the ones i know, they got 3 months off with more pay than if they had stayed at work while trying to dodge the virus and they won't get laid off in the fall.

Back by popular demand! Ive heard a lot of folks want to reconsider for those who did not take it n those who want to extend. Ive been giving it some thought though i dont know if i will consider taking it
Good luck in your decision making. Hope it works out for you...

Crema, Need to clarify. Southwest is currently offering 25% pay for the month to month ETO (Emergency Time Off) reduction in hours. They are offering a new program come Sep 1st that will be ExETO (Extended Emergency Time Off) for longer periods from 6 months, 12 months and 18 months, These longer periods will be paid at 50% pay starting 9-1-20, until then it is the 25% pay. And BTW; if SWA gets enough takers on the retirement VSP offers they will not accept any ExETO's. They also will be looking at the programs in this order until they finally get the number of folks to take them. 1st-- VSP Early Out Retirement, 2nd-- 18 month ExETO, 3rd-- 12 month ExETO, 4th-- 6 month ExETO, and 5th will be the same month to month regular ETO currently being offered.
And yes I am hearing of guys getting unemployment while on these ETO's. Not hearing of anyone getting the 600 bucks extra at my work as of yet, but I don't ask them how they are paid either.

yup. you have to keep in mind bumping. what i meant to say was 40% could be affected some how some way.

As long as you did not lie on the forms you will not have to pay it back. Remember also, as the unemployment paperwork states that, "TWC has verified by your employer that you were laid off temp and will receive benefits."

i'm comparing aa's next generation offer to others' (in this case southwest's). aa's 'new' voluntary leave didn't sweeten the offer, southwest did.

in my opinion, aa just wasted cloud space.

when aa comes back with 50% pay for voluntary leaves like southwest, they'll get some takers.

every state is different.

my state will call the company after x-amount of weeks and ask aa: "what is the status of this worker".

aa will reply: "this worker took a voluntary leave and is still out".

according to mngt., this will tip off the state that the worker WAS NOT laid off and took a voluntary leave. this is why they believe they will have to pay back the state.

until then, mngt. told me that my state is approving everything filed due to the virus crisis.
