US-AA Merger Articles (Merged Topics)

If you look at AA's announcement, all they really said is that they'll do what they're required to do - evaluate proposals. It's part of management's fudiciary responsibility. So nothing has really changed as far as a merger with US is concerned. I also wouldn't be surprised if Horton didn't slip an ace or two up his sleeve so he can convince the UCC that whatever US offers isn't as good as what a stand-alone AA would offer.

[quote]Could we PLEASE Keep this topic merger related articles?[/quote]

I may be a little confused, are we only to link articles but not comment on them? If so we are to open a new thread to make comments? That seem........just dumb!

The author who opened this topic has, himself, recieved criticism for violation of his desired forum protocol/etiquette. On the other hand, it is easier to scan the news without protracted debate and thread creep. In compromise, I'd suggest one observational impression, observation, or comment per/member. If a post quotes another in debate, then it is best placed in another thread. It could work to keep it clean and informative with lessthe frustration here.

American Airlines and its creditors to consider US Airways merger

Jack Butler, the creditors committee counsel, said the committee recognizes that one of its core responsibilities is to consider "all reasonable and viable strategic alternatives." He added that the committee still supports American's plan to remain independent but that alternatives need to be vetted.

APA spokesman Tom Hoban said American was expressing "faux concern" for its workers' seniority." "Has management ever been concerned about a seniority integration on its pilots ever?" Hoban said. "The short answer is they don't give a damn what happens in a merger with seniority integration. ... To hear them express crocodile tears of a negative impact on a merger with US Airways is laughable."

US Airways In Talks With IAG Over AMR Alliance Strategy

NEW YORK (Dow Jones Newswires) - US Airways has held talks with the parent of British Airways about its potential bid for American Airlines, according to a person familiar with the situation.

American is a member of the Oneworld global marketing alliance, one of three that dominate the global industry.

US Airways has held informal talks with American parent AMR Corp. (AAMRQ) and is widely expected to propose shifting from the Star grouping to the oneworld pact led by American and its main European partners, British Airways and Iberia.

Willie Walsh, chief executive of BA parent International Consolidated Airlines Group (ICAGY), said Friday that the company had signed a confidentiality pact with American about its restructuring plan.

IAG has hired advisers to assess the impact of American's plan to remain independent in the face of a potential bid from US Airways.

Unions get chance to argue against huge cuts by American Airlines

Rob Clayman, attorney for the flight attendants, pointed out in his opening statements three weeks ago that American said it didn’t consider the impact of a merger when it put together its labor proposals. “That could have tragic repercussions by forcing employees to take exorbitant, excessive, unnecessary cuts when a valid, viable opportunity exists, and they have not even looked at it,” Clayman told the judge. “They have not even considered it.”

Pilots union continues talks with American as court hearing resumes

Asked about American's decision to consider a merger -- a position that management all but ignored when it made its case for terminating the contract two weeks ago – APA president Dave Bates said, "Personally, I think AMR management is under a great deal of pressure."

American Airlines pilots take their case to bankruptcy judge

Andrew Yearley, managing director of Lazard Freres, which is advising the union, testified that American "had a network problem" and that a merger with US Airways is a matter of when, not if.

Throughout the hearing, the pilots pushed the US Airways merger. "We want to hitch our careers to a successful and thriving business plan," union chief negotiator, Neil Roghair said.

Romney’s Bain behind airline plan to slash jobs and pensions

http://www.peopleswo...s-and-pensions/

Just one "minor" correction, Romney has not worked at Bain since 1999--12 years.

From Wikapedia:
In 1990, Romney was asked to return to Bain & Company, which was facing financial collapse.[sup][58][/sup] He was announced as its new CEO in January 1991[sup][70][/sup][sup][71][/sup] (but drew only a symbolic salary of one dollar).[sup][58][/sup] Romney managed an effort to restructure the firm's employee stock-ownership plan, real-estate deals and bank loans, while rallying the firm's thousand employees, imposing a new governing structure that included Bain and the other founding partners giving up control, and increasing fiscal transparency.[sup][48][/sup][sup][52][/sup][sup][58][/sup] Within about a year, he had led Bain & Company through a turnaround and returned the firm to profitability without further layoffs or partner defections.[sup][52][/sup] He turned Bain & Company over to new leadership and returned to Bain Capital in December 1992.[sup][48][/sup][sup][71][/sup][sup][72][/sup]
Romney left Bain Capital in February 1999 to serve as the President and CEO of the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games Organizing Committee.[sup][48][/sup] By that time, Bain Capital was on its way to being one of the top private equity firms in the nation,[sup][60][/sup] having increased its number of partners from 5 to 18, having 115 employees overall, and having $4 billion under its management.[sup][57][/sup][sup][61][/sup] Bain Capital's approach of applying consulting expertise to the companies it invested in became widely copied within the private equity industry.[sup][21][/sup][sup][61][/sup] Economist Steven Kaplan would later say, "[Romney] came up with a model that was very successful and very innovative and that now everybody uses."[sup][62][/sup]

It's been discussed before that he has nothing to do with Bain, months ago, guess someone is not current on the news, lol!
