CIO, you are an idiot!!!

Destruction of the profession's pay and benefits via concessionary bargaining comes to mind as a TWU staple and accomplishment.

You had the opportunity to list TWU accomplishments.
Why did you not do that?

I got some: First in the industry to create a B scale and the last to get rid of it. First to "Bargain" away free medical. First to create a lower classification of mechanic (OSM). First to outsource AMT work to F/S. First to "Fight" for inferior benefits for AMTs. TWU negotiates full sick time pay and more vacation for other work groups. TWU also saw no need to match concessions made by other airlines who were in BK. They went above and beyond those cuts to ensure the AA mechanics would remain the lowest paid. But it's not over yet. They are in the process of giving away half our retiree medical money and also in the process of skimming off the top of the 4.8% equity. Now they say "Enough is enough". I have been saying that for quite some time. That's why I signed an AMFA card.

TWU Accomplishments....................................

Mike Quill, President and founder of the TWU, stood
on top of a soapbox as he held a shop gate meeting
outside of the IRT Powerhouse on 59th St. in New
York City in 1937.

The TWU was formed in 1934 during the depths of the Great Depression when New York City’s transit companies were abusing the nation’s dire situation. Taking advantage of the country’s 25 percent unemployment rate and subsequent surplus of job applicants companies hired and fired at will, and underpaid, overworked and mistreated their employees. Transit companies were all powerful, managers were brutal and working conditions were dangerous and abusive. For the first two decades of the 20th Century company hired goons crushed workers’ attempts at unionization, including four major strikes held between 1905 and 1919.

The largely Republican, Irish-born transit workforce reached its threshold just as an ideal leader emerged, Michael J. Quill. Quill’s audacious approach at unionization led to the formation of the desperately needed Transport Workers Union. TWU’s pioneers coined the motto, “United-Invincible,” and strongly believed that an organized, united front was the only way to win fair working conditions for themselves and for their members. They also fought for equality in the workplace, and spoke out against discrimination based on race, job title and ethnicity.

I agree with your statement and Mike Quill was the last real leader of the TWU.
How sad though, the best you can do happened over 50 years ago.

Gentlemen,

I can think of 2 things that the twu accomplished.

1. If a guy screwed up all the time, (major screwups!) the twu would move heaven and earth to save his job.

2. If a typical mechanic screwed up one time, the twu was likely to throw him under the bus.

I've seen it!

Unlike the agreements negotiated by AMFA or the IBT, the Bankruptcy Exit Agreement negotiated by the TWU has a snap back to industry standard half way through and a requirement that close to two thirds of aircraft maintenance remain in house. The TWU negotiated the first ASAP program for AMTs and maintains the best license protection program in the industry. The program maintained by the IBT is nothing more than a knock off of what the TWU developed. And the TWU has been far more active than any other union in responding to FAA rulemaking.

If you are looking for a group that successfully fought concessions, don’t look to AMFA, which has yielded major concessions and lost jobs at virtually every carrier where it has represented mechanic and related (Braniff, ATA, AS, Mesaba, UAL, Horizon, and NWA just to name a few). Don’t look to the IBT, which has given concessions at every property where it represents airline workers. Instead, look at, for example, TWU Local 100 which fought management and Bloomberg successfully through the years. It represents all categories of workers, including mechanics, maintenance, subway conductors, bus drivers, and ticket agents. It uses its combined political and bargaining power to stand up to a billionaire mayor and a wide array of corporate forces. That is a far better model for success and for solidarity than what is being recommended on this board, which somehow always comes down to destroying the TWU as a solution to bankruptcy and mismanagement and any other problem we deal with.

Dividing the membership to the point of hostility towards each other. Line versus Overhaul to get what the TWU wants in deals for themselves. Then blames us because we voted for it. Lies, deceit, back door deals, amendments to contract language without membership approval or input. Worst contract in the industry. Lose of benefits and pay unmatched to none. A leader in concessions. Blames other unions for their failures yet unwilling to acknowledge their own. And the list goes on and on and on and on and on to no end.
