American Airlines dropping Charlotte-Rio de Janeiro route

American Airlines dropping Charlotte-Rio de Janeiro route American Airlines will drop its nonstop flight from Charlotte to Rio de Janeiro early next year, the company said Monday, its first major service cutback since the carrier merged with US Airways in December.
American will still fly nonstop from Charlotte to Sao Paolo, Brazil. But customers will have to connect through Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami or New York's Kennedy airport to reach Rio, the popular vacation destination for its enormous... read more

Last time I checked RDU isnt a hub and hasnt been for years for AA.

So lets see traffic statistics for RDU vs CLT.

*Lowe’s and Domtar are located outside of Mecklenburg County but in the Charlotte region, so they are not included in the headquarters ranking. The ranking does include Family Dollar in Matthews, N.C., which is in Mecklenburg County.

Six of the 500 companies are headquartered in Mecklenburg County, ranking Charlotte 10th nationally in number of Fortune 500 companies headquartered within the county. These headquarters represent more than $162.9 billion in revenue for 2012. Lowe’s, which is headquartered in nearby Mooresville, and Domtar, which is in Fort Mill, S.C., increase the Charlotte area headquarters’ revenue to $218.9 billion. More importantly, 270 of the Fortune 500 companies have made a commitment to the city by placing one or more of their facilities within the county. This report lists a key representative of each of the Fortune companies that have a facility in Mecklenburg County.

And CLT is also the #2 financial center in the US.

More power too you, the money and jobs are in CLT.

SO why isnt RDU a hub anymore?

Have you ever lived in CLT?

There are some amazing and beautiful place, I live in the Lake Norman area, check it out sometime.

Motly Fool agrees with the premise that present AAL hubs are safe since all "have an economic purpose in the network".  What's interesting is the last sentence which is reminiscent of Carty's rationale for the TWA acquisition: "...Fortunately for the hubs now controlled by American Airlines Group, the hubs all appear to have an economic purpose in the network, increasing their chances of sticking around. The hubs of the old American Airlines all serve high volumes of passenger traffic and are a core part of the network. Former US Airways hubs also look to be a good fit as they are in areas where fees are often lower and their location allows American Airlines to direct flights while avoiding busier airports..."

I'm not smart enough to run an airline, all I said is I think Raleigh is a nicer place to live.

Raleigh?  Nicer? Have you ever lived in CLT?  Don't make me laugh.

If Raleigh is "a nicer place to live" explain why 700UW doesn't live there.

You can't, because he doesn't.  You are right about one thing...not being smart enough.

Don't let the facts get in your way.

;)  :p

If the money is at CLT, it's certainly not going into the pockets of the citizens... take-home pay seems to be 4-5% higher in RDU, home values are higher, rents are lower. That all says the local economy of RDU is doing better than CLT, and I'm not surprised.

When you compare all the factors that were shown, the smaller cities almost always do better than larger cities. It's just an economic fact.

There might not be as much business traffic in RDU as there is driven by BofA and the other banking outfits, but the yields at RDU are quite impressive in markets where the pharma companies absolutely rule the day.
