I heard the plan is still to go to Cactus--but they will continue to use 2 separate call signs for now. While flying on UA listening to channel 9, I still heard references from ATC to "Cactus 123". Now that the certs are merged, what's the plan for a unified call sign? I know there was a thread about this a while ago, but I don't recall seeing a final answer.

You think they're going to force British Airways to change their callsign from "Speedbird"? Or China Airlines from "Dynasty"? Not bloody likely. Please correct me if I am wrong but I thought ICAO or the EU said they couldn't use Cactus but had to use the name of the airline as a call sign. Anyone know for sure?
I hate to say this, but just another example of their MO. When they don't get what they want, exactly how they want... throw a tantrum until someone gives in. Like a child with a discipline problem, eventually they have to learn to grow up. Time to call in the "Super Nanny!"Management gave-in to the East's tantrum by allowing them to temporarily keep using "USAir"
You know, I actually agree with you, to some extent. The call sign is pretty irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, as I've said from the start. If USAirways ends up being the final call sign, I'll bet the West pilots will do exactly that and use the name with pride. Their initial argument was that since the combined company used the USAirways name, why not use the Cactus callsign to preserve some heritage from one peice of the new airline. It was the East who was up in arms about even the thought of using the Cactus callsign. A typical emotional tantrum with zero consideration for anyone but themselves. Just the thought of giving an inch was a huge blow to their perceived ego.Ya know, you work for USAIR,and fly for USAIR.Why dont you hold your head up,bite your tounge and and us the callsign USAIR. Start trying to be proud of who we are and maybe it will start to show all around.
Cactus is too good of a call sign to be used on this place. Retire its untarnished safety record with dignity.
why not change the call sign to "heritage" or "phoenix". i think phoenix is already taken but. i haven't heard anyone say heritage.
yes, and like you said, so do the AWA employees. so what' wrong with giving them a little piece of their heritage. This is something that is completely invisible to everyone except pilots and ATC.That is not the pride I was talking about.....as with AWA, believe it or not, the US employees have a lot of pride in a company they've contributed their blood, sweat, and tears to keep alive! That's what I was talking about!
The east doesn't know the meaning of compromise. When the boarding priority was announced, the only complaint you heard from the west was AFA filing a grievance. But east peoplle complained, on here, that it wasn't completely DOH. If it had gone to FCFS, you can bet the vast majority of east people would have whined all day. People on the west were disappointed, but accpeted it, and realzlied they still get to fly for free. You know, I actually agree with you, to some extent. So your same argument could be used in support of a Cactus call sign... bite your tongue and be proud of your new airline and one of the parts that made it what it is today.
I really think the whole callsign debate is petty. They should just flip a coin and be done with it.
