A question about the "Preferential Hiring"

Does anyone know what the medical rates will be for my members who accept an offer? Will they be charged at their former AA rates or will they be charged under your contract?

If someone comes in as a PTer and were to be assessed the IAM CBA rates roughly what are the charges for a PTer, single or with family?

Good morning gentlemen:

I was looking to get a little info and perspective from you guys. I understand in your CBA that the minimum shift hours a PTer can be assigned or bid is 3 hours. I was wondering in how many stations the company has those shifts and what are the rough percentages? Also can a basically new member make up some extra hours with working for others who want to take off?

Some of our members are concerned about this if they wound up accepting a preferential hiring position if it's offered to them?

Of a personal interest to me I was wondering about getting some info on FLL? I know we still have a while to go before we have a JCBA and I could even consider "maybe" transferring but nothing wrong with a little early inquiring. How many members do you currently have working there? What is the seniority like and what is the ratio of FT to PT?

Thanks people.

Okay, I cannot speak for other stations, but in PHX, I haven't seen a 3-hour shift offered... at least, not recently, if ever.  Most of the part-time shifts are 5 hours, and some are 4 hours, with a few 6 hour shifts, and 5 days a week. Usually the part-time shifts have early starts 0615 and 0730 or late starts 1800 with some afternoon starts.  Most people prefer the morning starts, so a new hire would probably have a later shift.  Full-time shifts are nearly all 5, 8-hour shifts with a few 4, 10-hour shifts.  The FT start times in the morning vary between 0500-0830 usually and nights start between 1330 and 1600 with some overnight shifts.

There are plenty of part-timers who are working over 40 hours a week, usually by picking-up dropped shifts and the occaisional overtime.  It does require some effort insofar, they are frequently scanning the "board" (Workbrain computer program) for available shifts.  Usually new hires cannot pick-up shifts for their first 3 months and no trading; however, I don't know how preferential hiring would treat AA agents coming into the US workforce.  Not including lead positions, there are approximately 250 part-time positions and 500 full-time positions.

Hope that helps.

That does paint a good picture of PHX and answer a few other questions for me Jester. Thank you.

Does anyone have some insight into PHL on the PT shifts?

Unless something changed since I retired CLT part time shifts 5.5 to 6 hours.

Harry
Thanks Harry. I know a guy who would like to go home but he honestly couldn't do it if he only gets 3 hours. I can absolutely understand his point of view.

We have 4 hours in our CBA but except when I hired on at LGA I never saw any of those in the two hubs I worked in.

WeAAsles,
I have worked in a hub for 19 years and an outline station for 15. Although the CBA affords the company the right to schedule 3 hour part time shifts I have never seen anything less than 4. We have 4 hour PT shifts in the outline station I'm in right now but it can vary with each work schedule. It seems to be based on how many PT hours manpower/staffing approves for the station. This decision is based on flight activity and PT to FT ratios. PTs can and do pick up extra hours from other employees looking for days off. A "newly hired PT agent" cannot pick up extra hours, unless offered by the company, until they have cleared probation. With our new CBA; the probationary period has been reduced from 90 working days to 100 calendar days. I'm not certain if preferential hired employees would be considered new hires. I would hope not. If they were not considered "new hires", the probationary rule would not apply. Therefore, they would be able to pick up additional shifts immediately. We need an authoritative answer to this question.

It's written in the agreement. Members on both sides who receive an offer will not be subject to any probationary period. So they can dive right in trying to grab some of those available hours.

And thanks Cargo. Any questions I can help with please hit me up.

A footnote regarding PT hours...

Many in CLT intentionally went from F/T to P/T to improve on vacation and shift seniority. There are so many hours available they never have trouble getting 40 hrs per week, and a lot of them get upwards of 60 hrs per week with trades and OT!

I've never been a proponent of P/T in hubs like CLT for those reasons. There are enough hours of steady flight line work to support ZERO part-time in most of the hubs.

Something to consider in the JCBA, lower the P/T ratio in hubs... it’s not needed!

I don't know about that in terms of PHX... in the morning our gates are so full that we usually have a half dozen planes sitting in the "penalty box" awaiting an open gate.  By noon, there are plenty of open gates pretty much until around 1530.  Our most busy "complex" (flight bank) would be in the mornings with some night complexes depending upon the day of the week.  Not surprisingly, the PT shifts are usually start around 0600 - 0730 and end about 1000 - 1230.  The PT night shifts start around 1800 and later, so there is a large gap between noon and evening in terms of having FT positions with less flights in the late afternoon.  There are some part-time afternoon shifts, but not very many.

AF US/LCC IAM FS Members will WE receive signing bonus $ tomorrow ? Combined with pay check or a separate check ?

weAA 's. SFO P/T . 6.5X5 hrs. wk. = 60 hrs. pay period.  LEADS do the schedule and call OT every day ! FT Agents give up their hrs. every day. PT or FT you can work as much or as little as you choose or can afford . If you want to  sleep in your own bed Brothers/Sisters use LOA and get back to your Station . There's no place like home !

Part time staffing is station specific. What works for one station may not apply to another. I support a system wide cap over no cap at all as evident with the UA agreement. No cap opens the flood gates.
