Well in regards to intelligence, the Washington area rates very high statistically. This results in having two professionals bringing in a very high household income compared to the rest of the nation. There's a reason why Kansas City is less expensive...

SWA sure must have a big nose to smell so well. Too bad they don't use that nose for other things that would help them.

If they are doing so well at IAD then why do they have such a miserable showing? No growth and a clinging presence is hardly a earth shattering involvement at IAD. It appears B6 has a better position at IAD than SWA. B6 is in many head to head UA markets and they do a pretty good job of it. SWA is but an afterthought to the NOVA crowd. One thing about the people in NOVA is they like to be treated like they are special. Something about the area that has turned them into believing they are somehow better than the rest of the country. I true NOVA snob would not be caught dead boarding an SWA jet. They either want to be 1K's on UAL or they will reward themselves with a nice comfy TV B6 flight. Flying SWA to NOVA is like riding Greyhound or shopping at WALMART. They won't do it.

Perhaps if the Hanes Wife Beater futures go up in NOVA then SWA may have a chance of generating some grip. In the mean time their "noses" will be bloodied by the other carriers at IAD.

Boy, that afterthought sure has been filling up our SWA planes out of IAD lately. Every flight I've worked out of IAD has been completely full. I guess those passengers traded in their tickets on UA to SWA at the last minute...as an afterthought.

And as for Hanes Wife Beater futures, I was on a UAL flight out of IAD recently and was fortunate enough to sit across the row from a man (in a nice business suit) who removed his shoes and socks and picked at his toes the entire flight. Yeah, I guess UAL has the competition all locked up when it comes to the "upper crust" of NOVA that wouldn't be caught dead on a SWA flight.

When Independence was in its death throes, they reduced prices and harmed not just UAL, but WN's BWI operation. VA pax no longer had an incentive to drive to BWI with just as cheap fares available closer.

Kelly has publicly stated that WN's presence in IAD was driven by a desire to ensure that another Independence (Skybus, Virgin?) would not be able to do the same.

There's no competition between UAL and WN, unless one considers clubbing baby seals competition. WN has been moving into UAL hubs, much as they did USAir's a few years ago simply because UAL cannot compete on pricing, despite employee concessions. UAL management knows they must change the status quo and have been exploring its options re merger partners.
