Southwest is in negotiations with United Airlines on a merge deal likely to be announced on April 31,2007.is swa going to expand dulles airport at all? I am confused what was the reason for swa to go to washington Dulles besides to take over independance air ?.Thought they would put a bigger dent in to united airlines Dulles hub then they have by now !! I think in order to stay at dulles they need to expand MORE!!

Well I couldn't think of another airline that has a big pressence out of IAD except B6, but that would've been more far fetched. That's about as likely as 'flyingman' not posting the same Dulles question, albeit worded slightly differently, again. <_<

Tentative plans are to make BWI the primary HUB in the east. BWI offered to build a new International Terminal adjacent to Terminal A. The merged company will still have a sizable pressence at IAD with maintaining several International Routes. In the merger process the companies will eliminate the TED product and Airbus will be utilized on mostly eastern routes in the system. Boeing aircraft will be based in Denver and mainly fly to western cities. While Southwest based planes will sell their 737-300's to an unlisted airline. Both United and Southwest 737-500's will be retired by April 2009. Also this will include the sale of the 10 Boeing 767-300's to US Airways upon completion of the Merger. The Merger is expected to be completed by 4th Quater 2007. The announcement is expected on the 31st of this month.
I certainly can't speak for WN management, but I suspect the reason they went to IAD was bacause they thought that the markets they'd serve from there would be profitable.wasn't the main reason to go to dulles was to compete with united airlines?
AMEN Jim. I don't think WN enters any market looking to capture "market share"...just profit.I certainly can't speak for WN management, but I suspect the reason they went to IAD was bacause they thought that the markets they'd serve from there would be profitable.

16 posts and all Dulles. You know...they have a lot of nonstops to Chicago...and from their the entire SWA system is available. Did none of the responses to your 15 other threads satisfy you??why is southwest not growing their washington dulles hub? I thought they were going to take the swa routes and add more to washington dulles it sounded to me like thats why they wanted to jump on washington dulles airports opening?.Could anyone please explain to me why we went to washington dulles, I thought it was to give dulles a low cost carrier? could southwest not be growing due to getting gates issue ? when they pick dulles the new city do you think they regret it now? I just don't understand going to dulles and can not connect the swa route map with dulles with the reasoning to go to that airport?

Spot on! SW is considered "cheap and embarassing". It's for people who are willing to drive a long distance to save a buck (e.g. BWI). Now that SW is at IAD, people will still choose a legacy carrier. Look at what happened to Independence and their $29 LAS flights--people from BWI would drive all the way to IAD for that. NOVA has a very affluent group and will not settle for a cattle-car, not at any price.SWA is but an afterthought to the NOVA crowd. One thing about the people in NOVA is they like to be treated like they are special. Something about the area that has turned them into believing they are somehow better than the rest of the country. I true NOVA snob would not be caught dead boarding an SWA jet. They either want to be 1K's on UAL or they will reward themselves with a nice comfy TV B6 flight. Flying SWA to NOVA is like riding Greyhound or shopping at WALMART. They won't do it.
Perhaps if the Hanes Wife Beater futures go up in NOVA then SWA may have a chance of generating some grip. In the mean time their "noses" will be bloodied by the other carriers at IAD.
