What would happend if we merge again?

I know Caesar's in LAS is VERY grateful for the relocation of convention business from PHX to LAS.
Thanks for catching my mistake - I meant PHX instead of LAS. But I still wouldn't put much stock in the PR about boycotts. In the end boycotts rarely make much difference except around the edges. Most big events are planned too far ahead and usually the activities at the city planned play a big role in choosing a location. In other words, don't expect PHX to drop much if any in the rankings for 2010 or 2011.

Thank you, you made my point.

Now, could you please cite a reference? Latest equals 2009?

Reason I ask is because of AZ's latest "birth certificate" law that drove a tremendous amount of convention traffic (non-leisure travel but considered O&D traffic) from PHX to LAS and LAX since before summer of 2010.
This data came from a friend who said it was late 2010.

And I made my point as well. PHX is 8th in the nation in O&D. That's something that can't be ignored.

More recent data can be found on the BTS site, but unfortunately not in simple rankings lists.

DOT data: 25 Largest US Domestic O&D Airports lined up per boarding’s

1. LAX

How do they rank in International O&D? Or in percentage of boardings in paid premium cabins? Or in percentage of business travel v. VFR and other tourism traffic? Business travelers (who pay for most of the paid premium seats) care more about NYC, LAX, MIA, CHI and DFW (the least important of the five) than they do the very nice cities of PHX, CLT and PHL.

The two transatlantic gateways, PHL and CLT, are so well-thought of by the Star Alliance partners that US hasn't been invited to participate in the immunized joint venture (with ATI) comprised of UA/CO, LH and the others. Because of this, US actually has to compete against its alliance partners across the Atlantic and is forbidden to cooperate with them (in ways that would violate the antitrust laws), a position no other USA-based airline is in.

You can find international O&D at the BTS, but not in ranking for more up to date info. Also keep in mind that the ranking is of airports, not cities. So NYC, with two big international airports, wouldn't be listed but JFK and EWR would. Each might have less international O&D but NYC combined could have more than LAX, for example. Also, one has to take the data with a small grain of salt. I don't have any idea of how many international travelers enter the U.S. on one ticket then travel domestically on another ticket, but they would count as gateway O&D when they really weren't.

As for the rest, that requires delving into the raw data and is most often only available from paid sources that make money doing the delving.

Perhaps, surprisingly, the changes I heard about were not about "boycotts" or social protest at all.

As a practical matter, the corporations have no intention of putting their "not obviously white" employees into possible harms way, subjecting them to possible detention or arrest, and not just once. Most conventions are about positive behavior and causing many of their convention attendees to have to constantly look over their shoulders is not considered "positive", by any stretch.

Very doubtful on both points.

Your "friend" is wrong as the data has not yet been processed. and, until more is known, a better way to say what you said is, at some point in time (2009?) PHX enjoyed a ranking of number 8 for O&D.

I wonder how much of that #8 consisted of illegals using PHX as a gateway to the US? /snark

Boycotts? Protests? Discriminatory stops? All make for great news but, in reality, don't exist here in Phoenix.
