Schwartz didn't freak out until the bag arrived in Orlando later that night.
Stuffed in it was an anonymous letter alluding to labor woes at the Tempe airline and statements that it was time for workers to "stand up and fight back."
"We are truly sorry for any inconvenience you may have when you fly with us as we must use the only tools we have at our disposal," it read, according to a copy Schwartz provided to The Arizona Republic
"We know you have a choice when you fly. Your baggage handlers of US Airways suggest you use it!!!"
Schwartz, who said the family later discovered a letter in another family member's bag, wasn't aware of the labor troubles at US Airways until she read the letter and its description of pay discrepancies between workers of the former America West and former US Airways.
Former America West employees, who are paid less than their counterparts on the East Coast, operate the flight Schwartz was on.
"I just couldn't believe it. It's like sabotaging your own company," she said. "If they want to make an impact and they want to create problems, how far are they willing to go?"
Gee said it appears to be an isolated incident rather than a concerted slowdown.
He said no one at the airline was aware of the letter and that its customer relations department had received no complaints on it except one in Orlando.
Schwartz said she reported it to the baggage claim offices in Orlando and Phoenix
