Freedom? Thats funny. We are not free. We live in a society. Survival of the fittest is not the way a society works. Car manufactures are not producing safer vehicles because they want to. They are forced to federal regulation that the population demands. They were forced to get to the CAFE levels they are at now. They were forced to put in ABS, safety belts, air bags among other things. Competition does not always work. Seems lately it rarely works. To many out side influences and folks with money pulling the strings.

Bottom line is we need to use less fuel and cars use a huge chunk of it and improving the mileage on them is and easy fix. Hopefully hydrogen will be refined to the point where it is more practical. May be we can start to harness solar and wind on a small scale to get our homes more energy efficient.

Some of their will happen through competition and free enterprise and some will be mandated by federal regulations.

Does anyone see the real stupidity of it? It's going to take us that long to reduce our dependence on foreign oil? So why are we bothering doing anything now?

One statement said that now you'll fill your car once every two weeks instead of of every week and a typical family will save over $8000 in fuel cost over time. Hmmm...the over time must be 100 years. Theymust assume that because you get 54.5 MPG, gas will be $1.25 a gallon

I can't see today's dollar being worth more in almost 15 years, nor can I see it having more buying power. This is just some useless proposal to take the attention off of other issues!

Also how exactly are you screwed when you are on an economic playing field free of most government interference? You succeed or fail based upon your own merit. No government rigging of the deck, just you and the free market. Nothing standing in your way from becoming the next Bill Gates.

You know I can't help but wonder just how well our minorities would be doing if once the Civil Rights act was passed if we just left them alone to fend for themselves. I say this not out of racism but it seems to me that every successful person of color I meet got to where they are on their own merit. They're up to there eyeballs in student loan debt just like any white boy/girl

I think it is my business. If your actions do not affect someone else then it is your right to do as you choose. If your actions affect others then society has a right to have their say. Regarding someones 'right' to drive a gas guzzler, that has an affect on society. The price of fuel is in part at least, governed by demand. If we as a society consume less of it, the cost will go down. If we waste it, cost goes up and everyone has to suffer because of the greed of some.

To think that industry has our best interests at heart is naive to say the least. Look at Ford (Pinto) if you want to see our interests being protected. Companies are going to do what ever makes them the most money. If people get hurt in the interim, OH well. So long as the losses are out weighed by the profits, all is good. Check the death tolls in the mining industry. Look at the numbers prior to the feds stepping in verses afterward.

So your argument is that with out CAFE we might have better fuel mileage? That is one of the dumbest things I have heard? What stopped them from it? There is nothing in the CAFE standards preventing them from exceeding the standards.

Free market is a joke. With out government regulation there would be no market. You would have corporations running the show. Collusion, predatory pricing, employee abuse would rule the day. More than likely most of the safety standards we have would be non-existent. MS would have shoved Apple off the cliff and burred Linux right beside it. MS has the buying power to put Apple under were it not for government regulations. Government already sat buy and let Ford, Chrysler and GM shut down all the competition. Tucker and DeLorean are perfect examples of the lack of government intervention. Tucker was buried by the Big Three.
