European Union officials are speaking out against the admission that Microsoft can and will ignore EU guarantees of data privacy when it comes to fulfilling the requests of the US Patriot Act.
During last week's launch of Microsoft's Office 365 cloud-based productivity service, Gordon Frazer, managing director of Microsoft UK, admitted that Microsoft would turn over any requested data to the United States government -- no matter where int he world the user lived, no matter where in the world the data was stored.
Not only that, Frazer admitted that although "customers would be informed wherever possible", users might never know -- no prior consent was needed, and gag orders or injunctions would suffice to keep the matter a secret.
Microsoft: "In a limited number of circumstances, Microsoft may need to disclose data without your prior consent, including as needed to satisfy legal requirements, or to protect the rights or property of Microsoft."
