At least those sound like the "right" kinds of layoffs. What I mean is that this layoff plan sounds like it's designed to reduce the CASM, rather than simply reducing the number of dollars in expenditures.

It's the sort of layoff that should have happened the first time, so that the subsequent concessions and layoffs wouldn't have been necessary.
mwiess,

Do the math correctly, the company has reduced 20,000 jobs. This is in addition to that. Its not that those 20,000 job losses wouldn't have happend. Taking out another approx. 20-30% is huge. Translates to folks left on the property working harder for less money, and less flexibility in work rules which will prevent employees from working other jobs to make up the losses or restore income for their families future.

These furloughs are designed to occur because of MORE productivity enhancements. We gave productivity gains in the winter concessions by all labor groups. <_< Folks like yourself have forgotten that cause you don't live it.

Am I mistaken that the bulk of those 20,000 employees were furloughed because of reduced service, rather than increased productivity?

I find it hard to believe that the company had enough slack to keep the same schedule, get rid of 20,000 employees, and still have enough left over for ktflyhome to be paid to sit in a room all day at PIT.

Actually, the initial furloughs after 9/11 that occured in Dec. of 2001 for all of labor had to do with reduction in fleet. There has been NO reduction in fleet since summer 2002 ratified agreement. However, we have had the bulk of the furloughs occur in the last two years. We've had a TAMPA hanger closure, we've had BWI base closure, we've had productivity enhancements, internet, and airport automation effect the agents, we've had staffing reduced to FAA min. and new reserve system that brought the reserve population for f/as and pilots down substantially. We've had terminations across the entire labor groups with no "recalls" of furloughees because of the attrition. WE've had retirements and resignations and again no "recall" of furloughed employees. We've had contract productivity enhancements specifically from the Winter concessions, and furloughs occured in all labor catagories.

More to come.

Here some more reality Mr Attitude. Without the mechs onboard your sorry ### will be gone as well. Get used to that.....
like i have told you before....POST MY WHOLE QUOTE befeore you respond to me!!

So, rhetoric aside, how much of the RIFfing from last winter was from productivity enhancements? How many people? What positions?

Clearly, right now anything that can be done to get the same number of passengers moving with fewer employees is exactly what the company must do to stay afloat. Keeping the employees and adding metal would be even better, provided there are remaining untapped markets; the increase in TATL is a good start there.

You dont think so?????

#1, Should have happened a long time ago!!!
#2 The rumblings i'm hearing are.........mechs know whats coming, sure hope utility is prepared for what is coming. Mechs are going to be downsized, bigtime..Utility is, or should I say, should be, downsized to where it belongs...As much as i hate to agree with our old buddy, "DAVE", he was correct when he said that particular position should not be a career choice. Should be mainly a part time job for young kids working through college, or looking for extra cash. Don't misunderstand 700, this is NOT gloating, dont want to see anyone go by the wayside...I just feel this is reality. It was bound to happen sooner, or later.

And please, don't post your typical response about class envy, mechs think they are better than everyone else, living wage, selling the other group out, BLAH...BLAH....BLAH!! This is the reality of the industry, it will NEVER go back to pre 9/11 days........get used to it
CAV..........this is for YOU.......Post the whole quote, not just what you disagree with. If you didn't see it before, read it again! I specifically stated the mechs are going to take it in the ass!! Was merely stating my OPINION of what is going to happen to utility.. You disagree with what i have to say.........thats cool, i love a good debate.. BUT......when you quote me, show the whole, damn quote!!!! It is fools like you on here who try to portray what you want people to see. What's wrong cav??????? Don't want everyone to see what someone else has to say??? Don't like the truth? Read some previous quotes. Seems PITbul is saying something on the same lines... PITBULL!!!!! .WE are all going to get hit.....ALL employee groups!!!! Get used to that!!!!!!!!!

Do tell how they are going to get everyone to vote for this?
pitguy..........All I can tell you is, when it comes to jobs, and what mechs earn, even after all this BS, it all comes down to one thing...the mechs will sell utility out in a New Yorrk minute!!!!! You know that as well as I do. I don't like this situation any better than anyone. Let me tell you, I have been job hunting for 8 months.......there are jobs out there.....but i can tell you without a doubt, you WILL NOT make what you do now,,,,,AND you will have to move out of PIT... Take that to the bank

There was a major layoff in utility since round two, went from 33 three shift stations to eight three shift stations and 10 third shift only.

Dont have the exact #s but we are down to 934 utility from a high of 3,000 several years ago.

If the company laid off 20,000 jobs and is still losing money then those jobs were clearly not required.
Whoa there, Nelly. I can think of some great ways the company could lay off 20,000 jobs and still be losing money, even though the jobs were required. Imagine, for instance, getting rid of all pilots and FAs, but keeping everyone else. The company would lose money hand over fist, since nobody would be traveling on US...and the missing jobs were very much required.

The key question is, did the company lay off 20,000 employees without cutting capacity?

And, even if they did, if doing so meant that customer service dwindled to the point where the most valuable customers leave, then those jobs were still required (in order to maximize revenue).

Obviously you didn't take anything to the bank and now you are on here slamming anyone who doesn't see your twisted world view of selfish, me me me attitude.

What's the matter Mr. know it all? Does the big bad world scare you so much you need to slam others who don't share your paranoid view of life?

You and people like MW spend all your time on here telling the U employee all about life just shows how pathetic of a life you sad excuses for men must lead, a very desperate, sad and scary existence. We have one believing he is a business professor and you the fright man trying to make people feel your fear and despair.

Grow up kid.

Cav,

You do a fine job of electing yourself as pope of the union worker and I don't recall any election held bestowing that honor upon you.

How exactly do you know his fear? In addition to being Oracle of Faith, Pope of the union worker & self annointed spiritual, moral, ethical compass of this forum did you overnight appoint yourself to the position of Forum Physcologist as well?

I may be arrogant and opinionated too Cav, but i can't carry your jock strap. Isn't humility one of the primary tenets of Christianity or did you miss that day in Sunday School? I missed MANY days of Sunday School and am flawed and working on being less flawed every day. Being "saved by Grace" is a wonderful thing. I just don't like people who try to hit others over the head with it with that air or moral superiority.

STAND BACK folks, Cav, will bring up the Xerox incident for the 1,00th time in an attempt to discredit me instead of focusing on or responding in a sane and logical manner to the commentary. He will also bring up how I have attacked his faith in some way. When you make you faith an issue in a public forum you had best be prepared to defend it. Look back through the threads and see how every time he is taken to task on this he skirts the issue?

I've seen the type before in fact worked for one. They "Hide bhind the Cross" in order to justify their actions while having no regard for ANYONE but themselves. They say the are "In the world but not of the world". That somehow perhaps by "grace" they are morally superior while their actions prove otherwise.

Finally Cav, Have you ever created anything of value? At least when I was confronted by things in my life I didn't like I took action. I helped form the Cockroaches. We have made a difference! Certain policies changed because of our activity. What have you done beside moan and complain and attack anyone on here who doesn't aggree with your unique combination of Neo-fascist liberal unionism coupled with your equally neo-fascist approach to religion. Just isn case you weren't aware the USA isn't a theocracy.
Bob, I read the first sentence in your post then I skip to a sane post whose post’s are not wracked with self importance and the pride of blowing your own horn.

You are no different but I choose to leave you out of that post trying to be nice, but since being nice to you requires being an a--wipe I absolutely include you in the many posters on here who are not even U employees but yet act like they and they alone know all about what WE should do, say, act, think, and feel. You and all of them can bite my hunky hind end!
