I believe the link that 700 provided to the letter to be factual . While the different locals maybe acting independently of the national , it is the national leadership that will make the final call . If the IBEW raids the IAM , this could in effect start a mini interunion war with the IAM turning around and perhaps trying to raid the IBEW … While we exist in our own little union world , 141 is just a small fiefdom compared to the vast kingdom that is the IAM , while many of us may despise our 141 leadership ,the question is , does that contempt for 141 carry over to the IBEW national leadership ? Remember the IBEW leadership will have mostly had dealings with our national leaders and we don’t know what kind of relationship they may have between each other .
Another question to ask is if the IBEW is willing to risk lawsuits over baggage handlers?
Some of you will continue on with the fight , and that’s fine , in my own mind I personally did not think this would succeed . I Have in some respects been proven wrong , I can feel a growing sense of comradely at work , no longer do I feel this vast gulf between new hires , young , old , part time or full time .. It really seems as if we are becoming ONE . My only hope is that if the aspirations of the IBEW crew are not realized that you will not throw up your hands in defeat and become disenfranchised .
Some think that we cannot make progress while the IAM is around , I tend to think differently .certain individuals within our organization view the IAM as a brick wall blocking our hopes , dreams and goals . I tend to view the IAM as a large dam that has a pent up lake behind it waiting to explode forth , and cracks are starting to appear .
I have never liked the idea of trying to wage a war on two fronts , and from a political view point that seems to be what we’ve been doing . I’m actually glad that the whole union drama is coming to an end before the holidays , now we can begin to focus all our efforts against the company .
While the IAM may not be the most effective union around , they are just a tool that we will have to use with more force , much like you would cut harder with a dull knife .
If we lose the COC (which I think is likely ) we will and SHOULD still continue to push for a better TA .Look I’m not shooting for the moon here , but it’s obvious that the last offer that provided 3rd world sick days and work rules not to mention job security was just considered by the majority to be unacceptable .
We’ve already discussed what a new proposal from this company should look like , now it’s simply time for the company to man up and lay it on the table . I think part of the fear from the companies perspective is that if they offer a decent contract to us it will only encourage the other unions to push for everything they want . Of course thou this companies negotiating team can’t seem to realize that you can’t compare oranges to apples .So will just have to fight really REALLY hard to get what we deserve .
One last note on the IAM , it’s time we started electing the people repressing us , sorry , did I write repressing ? I meant representing us . Also with salaries of over 100K we simply cannot believe in our leaders or even feel that they know our suffering . It’s time to bring the pay of our leaders more inline with the pay of the workers .
