Commuting on Southwest

We'll cause a scene together. I'll show up with an over sized rollerboard and three totes. I'll demand I go before you since I'm flying to Rome and your only a reserve trying to get into base under the radar. We'll have a blast. Hell we'll all have that block in NO time. It already went to 97 for April in PHL

Let me know where to show up. I've got my Paris duty free tote and Harrods black patent bag all ready to go. And just to make sure the agents know I'm "International" I'll dust off my Marks and Spencer shopping bag/basket!

Between the four of us it should be cheaper than buying tickets. The only thing is we must hold an early back from Europe Tue/Wed/Thu and must live near Moon Township. If you fit the picture - send me an AOL and we can sign you up.
Gloria, the IRS allows .50/mile which is less than the American West mgmt is getting on many routes. I'm sure your car will be packed. There may even be some tiny reserves that could fit in your trunk. You might want to get a Prius for commuting so that you get the most out of your gas mileage. Those junior kids will be your best friend if you drive around in that car. Those kids love the environment. They may even give up their seat on Southwestern out of respect and admiration for the hard work that you and the other PIT gals took on to build a world-class airline that was quickly and systematically ruined by an incompetent american west management team. And they should--after all, the reserve system exists to keep senior people you still working because of all your experience and knowledge of providing a comfortable and safe trip for the customers. Too bad American West stripped you of the tools to do your job proudly.

The IRS allows nothing for commuting expenses to your primary job.

I suggest a Honda Fit. 37 mpg and you would be AMAZED at the amount of room in one of those little cars. Might not be able to hold an entire 33o crew, but certainly a 767 crew in a very intimate manner.

Correction. If you are given an involuntary transfer (as in forcing PIT employees to commute to PHL) in which your new work location is more than a certain distance (500 miles, I think) from your old location, you can deduct commuting expenses and/or expenses of maintaining two households (think, crashpad) for up to two years. After that the IRS says commuting is on you.

You might want to look at IRS Publication 17 and get really good advice from a tax professional.

Your tax home switched to PHL and commuting expenses are not deductible from your family home to your tax home. The 50 mile test has to do with moving expenses, not commuting expenses.

My only point to GH was that the IRS values the real cost of driving at .50/mile. It isn't just gas. And love Honda, but all the kids love the Prius and she would be more popular with the army of youngsters who are trying to hurt the well-earned rights of the senior folks displaced from a world-class hub.

Commuting expense is a very touchy issue with the IRS. Especially for contract employees and "long term" consultants. And thank you for pointing out to others about contacting a good tax professional, and one who works with airline employees. This gets even more complicated if you cross state lines to work.

Betty, you must have been talking to that CPA we met that one night on our Knoxville layover on the DC-9. This Prius you keep talking about - is it a luxury vehicle? The kids always like the latest thing. Hell I am not on husband number four to drive anything less! Will it accomodate Fay Cochran-Devay (FCO), Betty Slocum (FCO), Phyllis Lapin-Vance (767 as long as its T/W/R) and me with all of our crew bags? If so I will talk to Mr. Holtz about a trade in. You know that pilot from Debbie's MAD trip lives near me and I always see him driving his huge SUV into the woods by my house. I think he really likes nature - but I heard those cars are bad for the environment.
