US Airways Applies for Year-Round Service Between CLT and Rio de Janeiro

Jan. 28, 2009

US Airways announced today that it has filed an application with the Department of Transportation (DOT) to operate daily, year-round service between the airline’s largest hub in CLT and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (GIG), later this year.

The proposed service will be operated with Boeing 767 aircraft with seating for 18 in Envoy Class and 186 in the main cabin. Service would originate at the airline's hub in PHL.

“Brazil is an attractive market for US Airways and fits well into our commitment to expand our international service,†said Doug Parker, US Airways’ chairman and CEO. “We applaud the Department of Transportation in securing new frequencies between the U.S. and Brazil and the Brazilian government in eliminating restrictions on the number of U.S. carriers permitted to fly to the country.

“As one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States, Charlotte is primed for international expansion. With non-stop service to 22 destinations in the Caribbean and Latin America, expanding our reach to South America from Charlotte is the next logical step.â€

“New service from Charlotte to Rio de Janeiro will open up a convenient and competitive option for business and tourism travel to Brazil,†said North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue. “The opportunity for US Airways to offer its first direct air link to Brazil is important to our international and domestic service and economic needs.â€

"We are excited about the possibilities of adding another international flight and connecting Charlotte to South America through Brazil,†said Pat McCrory, Mayor, City of Charlotte. “We greatly appreciate US Airways’ efforts to continually look for opportunities to expand flight choices for the Charlotte region."

Each year more than 13 million US Airways customers fly through Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Charlotte is the airline’s largest hub in terms of daily flights – 571 – and nonstop destinations – 129. Customers in 82 communities throughout the United States will have easy, one-stop connecting service to Rio de Janeiro with the proposed new route.

My understanding is GRU will not take any new entrants until there are improvements done with the airport, which aren't planned for any time soon. Soooo no new flights.

Also, If US was so serious about flying to Brazil, they would have had the application in on time when the window was open. Brazil is one of the harder countries in the world to get right to fly into. Not only are the number flights limited, but so are the number of airlines.

Not to mention, customs problems, and visa problems for US citizens to go down. Brand X airline, we used to operate down there, and if we broke down, it was on the average 5 days for the parts to clear customs, etc etc......sometimes longer to get mechanics down to work the problem, if the local guys couldn't do it.

Also, this was just an application, definitely not authorization. Just like last year with US trying to start SKBO. Didn't make it and Spirit was awarded FLL or MCO or maybe it was Jet blue......

thanks for the info. Debbie Downer.

Do you guys have any pilots that are based out of CLT that can fly the 767? If not then you can bet for sure that the pilots will be from PHL. Not sure how the F/A's work into this.

There are hundreds of pilots based in CLT that are currently flying the 757 and 767. None of them are transoceanic qualified, and that's why PHL pilots will fly CLT-CDG.

I'm not sure if South America requires the transoceanic school, or not, since the route will not cross any ocean.

Especially the part about applying for a route isn't an announcement you will be flying it.

Floyd, unpack your thong! It was just an application annoucement--not a route authority announcement. Looks like we'll still be working the MCO shuttle until Gloria gets back from leave and we can transfer back into TA.

  New Flash... there is NO TA "Division " anymore.

Looks like US is proposing change of gauge service GIG-CLT-PHL, with the CLT-PHL leg operated on an A320.

Well there should be and that's how the gals who built this airline treat TA. Junior reserves cannot be permitted, I repeat, canNOT be permitted in the Envoy cabin. They can have the overnights in DAY and ORF until they earn right to fly TA.
