Yes. They took the oversized carry ons and put a gate claim tag on it not the yellow express tags...because this is a mainline operation remember....then rampers bring it up to the jetway upon arrival.

So really the only thing customer experience wise that makes it Express is that it says it on the plane and there is no liquor.

There are not suppose to be any gate checked bags, except for strollers, wheelchairs etc. The procedure is one that if it does not fit in the overhead, you claim it at baggage claim not the gate. The same procedure at Mainline.

If the overhead bins aren't large enough for rollaboards and other "standard"-sized carryons, I can see the lack of gate claim service going over like a lead balloon. Many of your so-called business travelers won't be real happy if they end up having to spend an extra half hour waiting for their rollaboards to show up at baggage claim -- especially on flights which in some cases are replacing mainline and offer no first class cabin.

Just as an observation from the April timetable, the Embraer 170 flights replace 8 mainline flights and 8 express flights (this is assuming that flight numbers starting with 16 are MDA).

I hear what you are saying, but having the EMB170 in our city, I know what the policy we gave to the FAA and was approved by them. Also, in the W & B of the aircraft, there is no way to show carry on bags. Every bag is considered a checked bag and the only items we are allowed to bring up to the gate upon arrival are Strollers, Walkers, Wheelchairs, etc. that is it. I can tell you that durring the FAA Proving Run, that is one of the things they checked us on.

Wow, that is the best thing about Express.
They need to look at that situation. It says Express on the side. Some of our travelers only fly Express so that they CAN check their bags at the jetway/airstair.

I would think they due since it has a massive mark up in price. I will check that out when I go back to work, $5.00 a drink for something you pay around $.50-$.75 a drink for is huge revenue.

To the best of my knowlege, liquor was taken off all Express carriers and they now serve Beer and Wine only (no Henieken 🙁 ). I've also asked for a Bloody Mary Mix before and was told they dont have that, tomato juice, or Tonic because they are considered mixers.

I clearly remember an Allegheny F/A giving me a Rum and Coke non-revving into New York one time but that was pre 9/11. I think afterwards they cut back to very sparse catering, then brought it back without liquor, standard on all. Apparently before some had it, some didnt, and some were giving it away for free (officially, not just nice F/As 😀 ) Around the same time they standardized PA announcements (previously affiliate carriers had thier own announcements).

MidAtlantic flights definatly do not have liquor. The P&P manual on the hub states "Liquor is not part of the Embraer 170 Division product." Both the A and B fill out paperwork and the A hands it in.

So really the E170 product is almost like the old Shuttle 727 product, single class, legroom for miles, leather seats and beer and wine (although Shuttle was complimentary and had a nice selection of beers if I recall).

Overall, its certainly more in line with a ride on an Airbus or Boeing than screeching white-knuckled over West Virginia in a Beechcraft the size of your mama's minivan, but management feels it should be branded as US Airways Express. And they are always right, particularly when it comes to marketing and public relations. <_<

FWIW, $5 is completely reasonable. Go out in any major city in the US and you would be lucky to pay $5 per drink (with tip) at a bar.
