You're correct, however they didn't get stingers right away The U.S.-built Stinger antiaircraft missile, supplied to the mujahideen in very large numbers beginning in 1986.

So from 1979 to 1986 with the exception of financial and CIA assistance the Afghan rebels went head to head with the Red Army.

The war didn't "turn" until the Afghans got stingers.

It was the first time since the Soviet invasion seven years earlier that a mujahedeen fighter had destroyed the most feared weapon in the Soviet arsenal, a Hind attack helicopter. The event panicked the Soviet ranks, changed the course of the war and helped to break up the USSR itself.

Three weeks after Soviet tanks rolled into Kabul, Carter's secretary of defense, Harold Brown, was in Beijing arranging for a weapons transfer from the Chinese to the ClA-backed Afghani troops mustered in Pakistan. The Chinese, who were generously compensated for the deal, agreed and even consented to send military advisers. Brown worked out a similar arrangement with Egypt to buy $15 million worth of weapons. "The U.S. contacted me," [then-Egyptian president] Anwar Sadat recalled shortly before his assassination [in 1981]. "They told me, 'Please open your stores for us so that we can give the Afghans the armaments they need to fight.' And I gave them the armaments. The transport of arms to the Afghans started from Cairo on U.S. planes."

Reading comprehension an issue today? I've said twice now that I was referring to Stinger Missles. Prior to that millions in arms went ito Afghanistan primarily to upgrade their vintage WWI Enfield single shot rifles.

Had it not been for those folks who fought against incredible odds in the beginning the resistance would never have held out long enough or been trusted enough to ever get stingers.
