Aircraft maint issues

I would say do a TWU card drive, that's the best chance of getting your union back. The AMFA vote would fail again. Leaving you guys stuck with the Association.
AMFA vote would pass if only the same knuckleheads would stay away from pushing the Teamsters.

Unfortunately in reality could you get the %, you guys really need. The USair guys would pick the IAM, the Tulsa guys will want the TWU. Some people would want the Teamsters, especially if you could get United's contract. Plus those Unions would all work together , and the AMFA vote would fail again. Which means the Association you hate would still be there.

Here's the problem I see with this bill........It is citing FOREIGN REPAIR STATION MAINTENANCE..........What if the bill gathers steam and the airlines capitulate? Will the TWU be happy to have the work done by a dozen more HAECOS and TIMCOS as long as it is on US soil?
This will do NOTHING....NOTHING FOR AMERICAN AIRLINEs MECHANICs........NOTHING!

Or maybe they can organize the TIMCOS and HAECOS or whoever and collect dues from them?

I think you are wrong on that point, once the work is back in the states the shops will be subject to all the same
OSHA, EPA, Workmen's Comp. etc etc etc......... government regulations & under the direct watch of the FAA.
Even at a much lower pay rate than us, we would have a fighting chance competing against them.

Nice counterpoint. And these are the reasons a long time ago I liked coming to Airline Forums.

Actually if it were more difficult for North American Airlines to send the work overseas wouldn’t even the outside shops here have to raise rates to be able to attract applicants?

Just read it. LOA # 26 Regarding the CARP Plan.
That is what I was referring to. But it was in addition to a small increase in 401k match.
Between that and the buyout of up to a hundred grand, the senior most people bought the whole package.

True but it does not cure the outsourcing bug. Unless the union agrees to 3rd party wages.

Here’s what I see in my crystal ball, WeAAs....there will be a shortage of aircraft mechanics in this country. Instead of raising the bar to get young people back into this field like they once did, I see the airlines lobbying the feds to reduce the need to have everyone require a license. Maybe not in the time I have left here, but further down the road.

I haven’t read the entirety of their deal but it’s probably something along the lines of what we have here right now? PMCo stay in their CARP plan and PMUal get a 401k match or some type of mixture? Just like IAM currently are in IAMPF and we get a 401k Match.

A few months ago this commercial was on heavy rotation on CNBC.

Pemco in Dothan Alabama has had the IAM for years, and when I went there to teach an Engine run class a long time ago in my past life those guys started at $9.00 , an hour, don't know what they make now.

What’s a long time ago driver? There would be a huge difference from today if you’re talking about 1983?

This has now been updated to reflect 2017 Median pay. The bottom 10% make $40,000 or less. I suspect that very well could be Alabama?

It is a DB plan with lump sum option: CAL never lost theirs.

CARP

CARP Formula = (FAE x 1.19% + MAX(0, FAE - CovComp) x 0.45%) x MIN(30, Service) / 12
CovComp (Covered Compensation) is average of the Social Security Wage Base (SSWB) over 35 years before retirement

Assumptions:
PARTICIPANT CARP DC PLAN
Pay increases 2% per year Co. Cont.
Age 2016 50 Future SSWB increases 2% per year This should be the
FAE 2016 $90,000 amount lost by giving
2016 Pay (top scale) $110,000 up the current plan
Age At Retirement 65 years Earnings assumed:
Annuity Interest Rate 6.00% (for LS)

Pay Numbers Accruals

Final Average Earnings $139,561 x 1.19% = $1,661 per year of benefit service
Covered Compensation $119,448
Retiring in 2031
Soc Sec Ret Age 2033
FAE less CovComp $20,113 x 0.45% = $91 per year of benefit service
SUM $1,751
Service (limited to 30 years) x 15
CARP Accrued Benefit at later of 65 and retirement $26,269
Factor for early retirement x 100.00%
Retirement Benefit $26,269 ÷ 12 = $ 2,189 per month
Lump Sum CARP $ 294,151

Accumulation of Company Contributions given up in exchange for participation in CARP
$ 79,221
