AA, US Airways merger could lead to Tulsa expansion

Anyone see the group of people from USair on the AFW property looking at the base? About 40+ of them looking at the Base. USair was here to do an audit on TAESL but nobody has ever sent that many people to audit. The large majority of them were looking at the base. It has been quiet for a while as to anybody new leasing the base. Could the new AA(Parker & Co.) be looking at reopening the base? Interesting that that many people from US/AA are touring the base.

Turning Tulsa into a MRO would be another option but that opens the door for more low paid workers. Right up Parkers alley.
Would be the best option for the company provided MRO competitive wages and work rules are achieved. One would have to ask if TULE was truly a competitive MRO, why would airlines send their work elsewhere knowing the quality and expertise of the TULE facility and work force.

Shafted, doesn't mean a thing! When AA bought TWA, we had a group of  AA types come to MCI to see what they had bought. We gave them a grand ture of the Overhaul Base, thinking they know what they were  looking at, ------ wrong!!! They didn't have a clue!

The difference between MCI and AFW are like day and night! MCI was an environmental disaster(so ive heard). AFW is 20+ years old and still a state of the art facility !

To me it would make more business sense to reopen AFW than to keep Tulsa. Tulsa's economics are dependent upon government handouts, and the rest of right wing Tea Party Conservative Tulsa has grown tired of handing AA their Tax Dollars. Oil is up again, so they don't need AA.  If the volume of OH is going to decline as much as predicted with the new fleet then it would make more sense to maybe build something new in DFW and reopen AFW than to keep Tulsa which will be too big for the work that AA has and be in serious need of upgrades and clean ups.  Aren't parts of the base from WWII?

Sure there are no revenue trips to AFW but I'm sure the $17,000 it costs to ferry a flight to AFW, where you can put the crew in a cab back to DFW for a live trip, is less than it costs to fly a plane, even with passengers, to Tulsa where it would take several more hours to get the crew back, and all those lost hours would limit where they could use them even if they did get back.

Having most OH work done right at DFW makes the most sense, everything ends up there sooner or later anyway, with the heavy stuff going a short distance away to the still modern AFW facility.

At one time LGA was their main maintenance base, things change.

AA kept MCI for several years after the acquisition, even though it needed work. Comparing AFW to MCI is like compairing a 1937 VW beetle to a 1992 F150.

That's what a lot people thought going into bankruptcy, but if you will remember a loaf of bread costs the same in New York as it does in Tulsa, I doubt TUL mechs will except anything less then what a line mech gets. "If you don't like it move to Tulsa "

From where would it cost $17,000 to ferry a flight to AFW?    The cost to ferry a flight from DFW to AFW wouldn't amount to even 10% of that.

The cost of a loaf of bread is irrelevant.   Food is an insignificant percentage of the family budget for someone making $35/hr or more.   The real cost of living differences between NYC and TUL are in real estate, taxes and transportation.   Buying or renting a nice place in Tulsa would cost a small fraction of buying or renting a place to live in the NYC region.

that is true I have a brand new 3200 sq ft house bought 7 years ago at $205000 with a yearly tax of 2300

Yep, NYC, MIA, ORD, LAX, PHL, DCA are all high rent districts.
Underpaid airline employees can't afford to live there.

That may, or may not be true, but------ MCI was twice the size of AFW! And at one point in time, employed almost as many as AA now has at TUL.

Having worked at both AFW and Tulsa exactly what is state of the art about AFW? A hangar is a hangar and a shop is a shop, LOL

I looked into maybe bumping ord but the property tax is outrageous
Hey sport, come on up. You can hustle extra hours to pay those property taxes, amongst other higher costs,.... you just won't have the time to enjoy the property!
(don't forget your long-johns!)

Besides, what AA was paying Uncle Ross per year, for that real-estate, was outrageous!
