Aa To Buy Ual Pacific-rumor

I dont think UAL is selling mode. However U is more likely to be having a sale of assets and slots. LGA, DCA etc.

Most likely, UAL will sell off or lease domestic market assets. If they go the way of TWA by selling off their most lucrative international assets they will end up going the same way as TWA.

Another point, AA get a $4B loan? What kind of idiot would give a major airline that kind of money?

UA at LHR won an award for handling as the "best foreign airline" or something to that effect. I believe they have 800 employees for baggage handling because they handle all Star Alliance flights. That includes Singapore Airlines 3 daily 744 to LHR, Thai (daily), SAS( many daily), Asiana, Air New Zealand, SAA and others. LHR is the biggest international airport for many airlines and when you consider UA's responsibilities to all those 777, 744 and A340's 800 people is not too many.

800 people does seem more reasonable if UA ground handles that many carriers. Thanks, JFK777

When UA operated EWR-NRT they used a 747-200 not a 744 or a 777. This route is no longer operated by UA and hasn't been for quite some time since the late 1990's.

That's true, but UA's JFK-NRT is currently operated by a "range deficient" 777-200. As is ORD-PEK (I think-- at least it used to be-- although that one may have recently been up-gauged to a 747-400 due to strong loads.)

Let's say that AA does buy UAL's pacific routes(highly unlikely). With what airplanes is AA going to fly the routes?

<_< emily----- Sorry, but not quit the same! When TWA sold it's LHR routs to a.a., TWA was owned by Carl Ichon! The proceeds to that sale went totally into his personal account!!!! Not back into the Airline!!!!! Another reason TWA went down the tubes!!!! But not the only one!

The sale of TWA's LHR routes to AMR, was well rehearsed by both AMR's Crandall and Carl Ichan well before Ichan's now famous dance at 605 Third Ave. Infact there were rumors that many years prior to Carl's arrival, AA CEO Al Casey at 633 Third Ave had been " kicking the tires" at TWA. TWA's Compton knew this and "raised the bar" by entering AA's Caribbean. The rest is history.

As far as the Asian routes are concerned, NWA and the rest of the Asian Pact will fight to keep AMR out should UAL succumb. AMR has to spend big $$$ in DC before they can get UAL Pac Routes.

Money better spent on fighting off Jetblue.

<_< Since we're taking ancient history here, there was rummor at one point in time, Uncle Carl was thinking of buying a.a.!!! But that was a long time ago, and at this point, it realy doesn't matter! But I can just wonder, how it would have worked out if the shoe was on the other foot??????

IF UA goes under or sells the ASIA routes AA & CAL are the only two buyers I see. IF AA does buy them you may see the end of beyond rights to Asia but I think AA prefers nonstops to each city.

History does have a habit of repeating itself.

Those are also known as Fifth Freedom rights:

The right to enplane traffic at one foreign point and deplane it in another foreign point as part of continuous operation also serving the airline's homeland (e.g. Northwest Airlines has "fifth freedom" rights to carry traffic between Tokyo (B) and Hong Kong ©, on services which stop at Tokyo (B) en route between Los Angeles (A) and Hong Kong ©.

Freedom Rights

Fifth Freedom - This freedom is also sometimes referred to as 'beyond rights'. It is the right of an airline from one country to land in a second country, to then pick up passengers and fly on to a third country where the passengers then deplane. An example would be a flight by American Airlines from the US to England that is going on to France. Traffic could be picked up in England and taken to France.

Thanks. I didn't have a clue, and failed totally at trying to figure out the meaning from the context of the post.

<_< Just a little trivia here! At one point in time there were only two U.S. carriers with these rights! You guessed it! TWA, and Pan American!
