AWA MEC Conference Call
Fellow Pilots,
I had the occasion to listen in on the AWA MEC meeting yesterday June 22 @ 4pm EDT. The format was just like our MEC has done in the past where you call in to the provided number, enter the provided code, listen in on the meeting, and engage in the Q & A session if you so choose. I was surprised the system allowed me to listen in and I don't know if any other East pilots did so, but here is my take on what I heard.
Capt McIlvenna opened with a brief introduction, of which I missed the first part. In general, a brief overview of where things stand with JNC and the Nicolau Award was presented. The session quickly entered the Q & A mode at approx. 4:05 EDT. 95% of the questions pertained to the Nicolau Award and JNC.
One common thread among all participants, including Capt. McIlvenna, is that the EAST pilots are a bunch of "whining cry babies" acting like "spoiled brats, throwing temper tantrums, until they get their way". Capt. McIlvenna commented that he has expressed to the company and to Capt. Prater that "Bad" behavior should not be rewarded, and that "you don't reward children who behave this way by giving in to their demands". There was a remark about our "disrupting the operation" being one aspect of our "bad behavior". I guess Capt. McIlvenna sees it differently when the West pilots disrupt the operation in an effort to influence JNC negotiations.
I have to say, I have no doubt the West would be "whining" just as loud if the shoe was on the other foot.
There was much concern expressed about the future progress of JNC talks. They are keenly aware, and Capt. McIlvenna reiterated, that this list will not see the light of day until we have a joint contract. They know we can drag this out and this concerns them. Capt. McIlvenna expressed however, that once the money is on the table and we are looking at $20K to $30K raises OR MORE, not to mention work rule and benefits improvements, he feels the top two-thirds of our list will take the contract given the devastation we have endured here. He beleives the top two thirds of the list (who didn't fare too badly in the Award, in his opinion) will take the money and run. Quite frankly, this concerns me as he could be right on this point. I hope we prove him wrong.
Our power, absent removing ALPA as our bargaining agent (more on this later), lies in JNC talks. Should ALPA accept and submit the Award to the company and we do not persue or succeed in removing ALPA, our only hope lies in JNC talks. Our turning down a joint contract that promises significant raises to the West may be the only thing that brings them to the table to acknowledge the inequities and negotiate some relief in the Award.
Capt. McIlvenna posed a senario, much to his amusement, that goes like this:
East votes down a favorable joint contract in favor of keeping operations separate thus allowing them to continue advancing through attrition. This precipitates negotiations for solutions to the Nicolau Award. Solutions are achieved, however, they must be approved (per the transition agreement) by the West. West susequently votes down the negotiated solutions.
Now I don't know about you, but if this statement doesn't scream windfall, I don't know what does. If they are willing to turn down significant money to protect their 'gift', they must be pretty pleased with that 'gift'.
At one point Capt. McIlvenna had the audacity to state (and yet he prefaced with a caution that maybe he should not so state) that he felt the West could have and should have done better in the Award and that they did not fare that well. My guess is there is some obligation on his part in making this statement lest one accuse the West of receiving a windfall in this Award. Please recall his statements recently made in his Chairmans Letter proudly boasting of the "tremendous return on their initial investment" that the AWA pilots recieved by virtue of the
Award.
Capt. McIlvenna stated he felt that our MEC was largely out of touch with the majority of our pilots. He feels that the PHL pilots and the bottom third of the list are getting the attention of the MEC but in reality the majority of our pilots have different views.
One caller asked about the West entering into Section VI negotiations and going-it-alone. Capt. McIlvenna responded that the subject has been discussed and looked into. The company is not interested and quite frankly, going into Sec. VI negotiations would put up a "hard fence" giving the East exactly what they want.
Comments were made about Jack Stephen approaching Doug Parker concerning "equal pay for equal work". Capt. McIlvenna responded that this is ridiculous and that the company would never agree to it. Additionally, that if any accord were to be reached, it would have to encompass a tri-lateral type agreement to include the West agreeing to
it. It was speculated that Jack's approach concerning this matter is an attempt to get some money now for the East in order to appease the top two-thirds of the list, thus diffusing or mitigating the likelihood of the senior east pilots voting in favor of whatever may result from JNC negotiations. In essence "making the carrot smaller". We'll see how this plays out.
There was a fair amount of petty banter that served only to reiterate, and demonstrate to me, that ALPA is no brotherhood! Discussions such as B-Scales (keeping us at lower pay), statements such as "I can't feel sorry for the East. They whine over things they lost that we never had" (now there's someone who knows how to set the bar high!) Another one I really got a kick out of was "They were the highest paid in the industry and they essentially drove their company into bankruptcy".
I had to bite my lip when one pilot called in to voice her displeasure at the stagnation they have been experiencing since the merger was announced. Poor thing, she had been there, from what I could gather, about eight years (which puts her very near the left seat). She was very upset that she will now have to wait in the right seat while this
mess gets staightened out. Meanwhile, the East pilots will continue to upgrade as our pilots retire yet she is stuck in the right seat. She stated something to the effect that it was frustrating to watch her hopes of upgrade disappear. Well....First of all, welcome to US Airways, Hon! And secondly, apparently she has NO problem with our 20-23 year F/O's having their hopes of EVER upgrading being taken away by this Award. OK, Sorry, my blood pressure is rising and I'm getting a little flipant. I'll try to stay on track and keep some composure.
Questions were posed about the validity of the award and what action the EC will take on Tuesday. Capt. McIlvenna's response was that it is his opinion, and that of their legal council, that the "List is the List" and it will stand. What the EC does on Tuesday however, that's the 'million dollar' question. He speculated one of two things will occur. 1. The EC will accept the list as is and present it to the company whithin a timeframe they see fit. Or, 2. they will continue their delay tactics further prolonging the false hopes of the East. In any event, in his opinion, it will not be set aside on Tuesday.
Interesting to note, Capt McIlvanna comented on the forthcomming video message from Capt. Prater that would be released later that evening (last night). I had heard nothing of this forthcomming message from our leadership!
This is getting lengthy so I will atempt to wrap it up by retuning (as promised) to "more about removing ALPA as our bargaining agent", and thus the main reason for posting on this venue.
Capt McIlvenna's response to questions concerning our attemps to remove ALPA at US Airways was this: (paraphrased) "When I hear of any group organizing or attempting to organize an effort to remove ALPA, I just laugh. Bringing about a change in bargaining agent on any property is a formidable task".
Ladies and gentlemen, we cannot fail in this attempt. I beleive Capt. McIlvenna has been down this road and he knows a bit about the tremendous amount of effort and hard work that lies ahead of us. I beleive those taking the 'Bull by the Horns' here are beginning to see
just that. Let me just say here, that I am impressed and encouraged, on one hand, by the enormous efforts of those individuals taking the leadership roles thus far in promoting our cause. To you, you have my greatest support, respect, and appreciation. Thank you! Don't give up! And to those of us who have 'gotten off our asses' enough to be engaged on this board and at decertifyalpa. com AND more importantly have begun our contributions, please, spread the word! This effort is going to take thousands, not hundreds. This, on the other hand, is my concern. To date we only have a couple hundred engaged on this board (now moving to decertifyalpa. com). We should have thousands! I am hopeful that this cause will gain momentum quickly. I believe getting the 'packets' out will help in that vein.
Finally, Capt. McIlvenna stated (as has Capt. Prater via his video message), that removing ALPA will do nothing to negate the Nicolau Award. Of this I am not sure. I do know however, THAT is the 'Million Dollar' question before us and it is being looked into by the leadership of this cause. Regardless, it is time for ALPA to go.
There are many reasons to move on. Many risks as well. But it is time for us to take charge of our futures. It appears ALPA is failing in that regard.
I'm sorry for the lengthy post but I could not keep quiet after hearing what was said out West yesterday. It was hard for me not to chime in on their little meeting, but I held my tongue.
One final thing. Capt McIlvenna has put forth to Capt. Prater the idea to have Capt. Prater join him and Jack Stephen on a road show around our bases (East & West) to get the input, reactions and responses to our views of the Award. We'll see what transpires here.
USA320Pilot comments: I am beginning to believe the best option for the East pilots is to not have the Nicolau Award thrown out by the EC because then the parties could be required to go through current ALPA Merger Policy again.
If the EC passes the Nicolau Award on to the company then the US Airways pilots will begin the effort to remove ALPA from both the East and West property, seek to obtain a pay raise per Doug Parker's initiative, and not agree to joint contract for many, many years.
In my opinion, after the US Airways pilots read the email message above the anger will exponentially grow and this sentiment has the potential to rip through the company and will become even more toxic, if not lethal to the business enterprise.
Regards,
USA320Pilot
P.S. Lynyrdskynyrd, Jack Stephan comments represent the views of at least 75% of the East pilots. His comments are dead-on accurate. Most pilots believe if US Airways burns to the ground over this so be it.
