If the airplane was on fire, that would be the correct procedure. From I have been told, the engine just quit. The 777 has 180 minute ETOPS ability. I think would it have better to just go on into DFW. The time difference would have been minimal and DFW is much better equiped to handle international flights then Tulsa is. Does Tulsa even have a customs dept?

Has is the key word. Doesn't mean you utilize it. An engine quits, you land at the nearest suitable airport.

207 ETOPS capability on certain routes.

An American Airlines flight bound for Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport made an emergency landing Friday night in Tulsa due to reported engine trouble, an airline spokesperson said.
Flight 79 from London was scheduled to land at DFW around 7 p.m., according to flight information.
Instead the Boeing 777 carrying 230 passengers and a crew of 14 landed at Tulsa International Airport around 6:30 p.m. due to a reported issue with the left engine.
The plane landed without incident, the airline said.
The plane was taken out of service for maintenance and a replacement plane was sent to Tulsa. The flight was scheduled to arrive at DFW around 11 p.m.

TULSA – American Airline Flight 79 was diverted to Tulsa International Airport Friday evening.
Initially Flight 79 was bound from London to Dallas Fort Worth Airport, but an engine issue diverted the plane towards Tulsa.
The Boeing 777-200 with 230 passengers and a crew of 14 landed around 6:30 p.m. July 11 without issue.
The aircraft was taken out of service for maintenance as passengers and crew await a new aircraft.

From what I read, sounds like the gearbox crapped out.  Chip detectors were loaded.
If it was the dominant left left engine with all of the systems running off of and suddenly lost gearbox power, I'll bet the pilots took a **** as the 777 makes a lot of cockpit noise when it switches over to the right side power. I probably would have landed too. The only problem now is logistical in getting the equipment to tulsa for an engine change.

Read your FARs "captain."  On a twin engine airplane, the loss of an engine requires landing at the nearest suitable airport, not the airport that would be most convenient for the airline or the passengers.  WCS is absolutely correct.

just looks funny to the flying public that TUS is the Major Maint base for AA

1 in 1000 flying public passengers are aware that TUS is the major maintenance base for AA.

Engine quits = land the plane now.

And Capt Reality,

I guess you don realize TUL is AA's largest maintenance base.
