WN Mechanics seek mediation

Plus huge new contract packages to pilots and FA's. Don't forget all the new construction of massive buildings and sky bridges at headquarters. And don't get me started on the billions spent on stock buy-backs. We all know whose pockets get lined in those deals.

Yes. 3-5 Billion is currently being spent on all buildings, hangars, and office facilities, as well as a very, very expensive sky bridge(s) at headquarters and three other buildings. They are spending $$$ left and right. They are handing out raises and bonuses to management left and right while all along we have been sitting idle for the last 5 years and will more then likely continue to sit idle for many more years the way the company is negotiating. And they are still operating under our current contract that they SAY they cannot sustain any longer, whatever SWA, get a clue, run the numbers as they continuously prove that SWA can in fact sustain our current contract and then some. Try again SWA...

Let's get to the heart of the problem and quit talking about what the company can pay you. Let me give you a CBT question.

The Company does not negotiate in good faith because they believe....

A. This work group is a bunch of replaceable unskilled grease monkeys

B. This work group is frightened to death to have a strike authorization vote

C. This work group has absolutely NO leverage to demand anything

D. All of the above

I'll let you study this question overnight and I will post the answer tomorrow. Hint to successfully answer this question. Take into account that section 6 negotiations was started just shy of SIX years ago. Not SIX months ago.

A troll say's what?
Nobody is going to be stupid,we will come to a deal when the company decides. I really don't think we are that far off, there is stuff in the works we as a maintenance group don't talk about on forums !

Ok, I was being a smart ass with my post. Let me ask you, why are the ups mechanics so much bolder. Back in November they voted for a strike authorization that passed by a whopping 98 percent. This past February they filed for release from mediation. What leverage does this mechanic group have that we apparently do not? UPS only has 1200 mechanics. We are by far the biggest domestic passenger carrier. I would think we would have more leverage as far as commerce is concerned. What gives?

It's called they are the Teamsters, rather you hate them or not, with about 650,000 members that have political power in Washington, that affect trucking and commerce that's the power they have ! AMFA is more of a regional union with two Airlines, and with SWA as big as the membership in AMFA is we are more like an in-house union! We are also patient we are not going to be stupid and shoot ourselves in the foot !

Thanks for the reply. You sound like a reasonable person.

I stand corrected didn't want to overshoot ,your right actually 1.4 million members in U.S and Canada either way alot of political power, it's been a long time since I was a Teamster !

For me the name on the union door doesn't make much difference to me. All I want is positive results. I suspect most are the same. Industrial or craft type union, who cares. Favorable results is what matters most. I could give a squat about teamster backdoor deals or whatever. As long as they produce. The vast majority doesn't even vote. So I know most could careless who the union is. True?

It comes down to does the union doesn't matter which one, just gives in to the company and produces a deal, now do people really read it, to see what they are buying or do they just vote for it, then later learn they have to live with it, and then complain how they were sold out by their union!

You both bring up a good point. The sad reality is that a large number of the mechanics are apathetic. They just want their "union" to take care of everything for them. When it doesn't happen then the whining starts. They need to realize that "we" are the union. We all need to be on the same page to get anything done.

The sad thing is most people do not care anymore, so the company wins the war, but we are the union and Crow's foot your right! We are in a holding pattern, so we wait!
