Will Oneworld lose JAL?

Swire has pretty deep ties to both Australia and the UK. They're the majority owner in Cathay. Cathay also has deep ties to Qantas and BA.

You can believe what you want, but I don't see CX changing teams.

Maybe not, but if JAL does, it will leave OW much worse off than it is currently, and other airlines may start jumping ship. CX may possibly be one of them, or may not. Either way its JAL that will make this interesting. Basically Arpey has said he will do whatever he has to, to get them to stay, like paying their bills with your money. Bye Bye raises. Either way DAL is very smart for doing this, they either get them over to SkyTeam or they get AMR to spend some of their much needed cash on maintaining them in OW.. Its a win win for SkyTeam and Star.

I'm wondering if there isn't a way for AA to pay for a dollar dance with JAL. Rather than just sitting there waiting for JAL to come over and ask for a dance.

How risky would it be for us to buy up some of JAL's debt? Would it give us a seat at the "deciders" table? Does it put us in any better or worse position to spend our $300 million on their debt now, rather than a $300 million cash infusion later?

Here's an example of a company buying another's debt for control: Dish/Sirius

Are there any "tricks" that would give us the upper hand?

Actually, that is, in a sense, exactly what both AA and DL are offering to do. We (or DL) give them cash. They pay down debt to put themselves in a better financial position. In return, he who provides the cash gets a say-so in JAL's future--usually in the form of a seat(s) on the board, wad of stock (may/may not be majority control), joint operating agreements (codeshares, etc), etc.

I'm thinking TPG's involvement might end up being a good thing for JAL and AMR.

You better pray it is, not much that TPG dips its hand in is a good thing.

That would certainly be an investment tailor-made for AMR - one that produces failure - but more likely a way in the back door of AMR for TPG to pillage and plunder with bonuses all around.

You're right --- it was a huge mistake for TPG to bring someone like Gordon Bethune in to run Continental... that was *such* a failure...

Just think if Bonderman could bring in someone like Gordon Bethune to AMR....

Give up, E. Sublety and irony are lost on goodgirl. The only thing she understands is slams against AMR, it's employees, their dogs and cats, and their dead granny. Girl evidently thinks of nothing else all day long every day. Sad.

Well, this is a different time and place.. But only the rational know that. Just like AMR isnt the same AMR it was in the 80s and 90s, neither is TPG.. What have they done RECENTLY, do your homework... And Jim, go cry elsewhere.

I'm not crying. I have a life; so, gigging you is just a casual entertainment. I'm not crying. I'm laughing at how ludicrous you appear with your constant "objective" spew of bile and vitiriolic opinions about an airline you claim to care nothing about. You have yet to present any facts to back up your statements--just your dislike for AA. Your opinions and $2 will get you a grande coffee at Starbucks.

As I said earlier. AA must have done something to you that you took really personally for you to have your knickers in such a twist about them. Life is way too short to hold that kind of a resentment.

It occurred to me that DL may or may not actually want JAL in Skyteam. As has been pointed out, there are some fairly formidable regulatory hurdles to get across. Not the least of which are the 5 Freedoms rights of NW which I'm sure will accrue to the merged airline.

Their motive here may just be the damage they could do to AMR and the Oneworld alliance. Particularly, if their agreement with JAL is that they only have to pony up the money IF the move of JAL to Skyteam is approved. That could be years down the road, and in the meantime, OneWorld and AMR are deprived of the codeshares, etc in Asia.
