Who Will End Up In Control?

Not true. America West was a total dog just prior to 9/11. Now it's actually a decent airline.

And why is that? Because on 9/1/01 Douglas Parker (thankfully) replaced William Franke as CEO. 9/11 had nothing to do with the turn around. It was a function of getting rid of Franke and happily finding out that Parker a was far more capable airline CEO then Franke.

The ATSB loan was a function of 9/11 in the respect that AWA was to sign an already negotiated deal for new financing on 9/12/01. That deal went away and AWA was in a very bad spot. Parker, with help from the employees, got us through that bad period of time.

My gut feeling and from the speculation I have been hearing is don't be surprised if John Orenstien and his financial partners end up in control of US Airways upon emergence of bankruptcy.

That's one of the options facing mgmt. The techniques to be employeed are nothing to be excited about. We all know how badly Johnny O. wants to be a major player in commercial aviation. At one time he began a parallel carrier(Freedom) to his existing one, to get around a contract that he wasn't happy with. Also the heavy interest in U's 737 fleet. If you want to see the final result of this option, just take a look at MidwayIV. Chapt 7, shut it down, sell assets, dump employees+contracts, then restart with either the same employess or new hires and no contracts.
