I'm looking for some informed opinions on the IAM. I mean they have Boeing right? Why no interest in them?
As a former member of the IAM, their failure like amfa was internal. We begged them to remove us from single bargaining with ramp employees. It was only after the threat of changing unions did they finally comply. From then on, the system of local lodges overseen by district lodges overseen by grand lodges became too much of a hindrance. The system of Local autonomy as practiced by both the Teamsters and amfa was much more productive.
Finally, the largest degree of dissatisfaction with the IAM has to come with it's inability to conclude or follow up with contract negotiations. They have a hard time at the table, and an even harder time enforcing what the managed to win. Simply terrible at accomplishing either.
IAM served it's purpose back in the day, and still is useful in some industries. As representatives of mechanics, I chose amfa over them once before. If the choice were mine, I might seriously consider doing so again. If you know my displeasure for the association, that really says something negative about the IAM.
