I haven't heard about the "BOB" story? Can you enlighten me?

No problem. Late July, 2004, UAL SYD-LAX returned to SYD over concerns that letters "B O B" written on barf bag meant "Bomb on Board" or some other type of threat.

Passage of time has made news links hard to find, but many posts on Flyertalk at the time. Here's one such thread:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread....ghlight=bob+syd

Here's a blog entry (no, not my blog) about it:

A Google search should reveal more details. B)

The Captain is said to have been standing at the entry doorway when the shooting occurred, and has backed up the FAM's version of the story. The FO was in the cockpit and wasn't aware of anything until the shots were fired.

Good thing it wasn't a FFDO who did this... we'd have all the right wingers calling to end the program immediately.

Too bad it wasn't an FFDO and they didn't end the program.

Oh, another AA acronym that stands for something else too. Let's add to the stupid list.

FU FLagship University and of course F.U.
EPT's Emergency Procedures Training and Early Pregnancy Test
BOB-Buy On Board, Bomb On Board. Interchangeable I am sure.

There are a few more that I remember laughing about but can't recall at the moment. Anyone else think of any please chime in.

On what do you base your statement?

FIY: FFDO is not an AA acronym

While we are on the subject, I was not referring to the FFDO in my post regarding the acronyms. For some reason this site likes to double up posts if you answer two in the same thread.

If you want to hear what we call the FFDO though.

Fearful Flight Deck Officer

F'ing Foolish Deadly Operator

I haven't met one person yet who appreciates having an armed pilot on board, particularly the other pilot in the cockpit. Whenever the bad a** says "I am armed" we all roll our eyes when he turns away.

Not really sure what your problem is. Do have any better ideas for preventing the commandeering of an aircraft, or is your view just based on your "feelings" about guns?

:D How does a gun in the locked off cockpit do anything to make me more secure? The cockpit door is locked. The pilots come out and it is up to them and the FA's to work together to make sure a cart locks off the area, they are aware of any approaching people, and that the door doesn't stay open too long. A gun would only complicate matters if the person breached the cockpit door and got a hold of the gun.

You want to really secure the cockpit? Have the FC lav only accessible from the cockpit, cater cold meals, and leave the door locked the entire time.

I don't think a gun makes my flight safer than simply being security conscious at all times.

I know there are people that disagree with that and I guess I will just have to live with it. I just wish I could object to working purser when there is an armed pilot because I don't feel comfortable doing bathroom breaks with one or having them answer the door with their hand on the the gun. I resent it.

Haven't you learn by now that the airline pilots are God, so so they think. They should not have a gun any more than you, and they sure as heck should not be paid anymore than what you get paid. All the are, are bus drivers, who can punch a few numbers into a computer. They are no more inportant to the running of an airline, than the cleaner. Maybe, just maybe, one of these days, the airline companies will wake up and only pay them $20.00 an hour. That is much more than they are worth.

There are jerks in every department. I think it is just that when a pilot goes bad they are really, really bad.

I don't think the $20 buck an hour pilot pay will come any time soon. I don't think the rates will stay where they are forever, though. Not with the econo-box airlines leading the way down the slope. Jet Blue workers are doing whatever they can to ensure the Walmart effect keeps thriving.

I am a shooter, but have to agree that armed pilots don't add much safety. A right-handed captain is particularly limited in his usefulness, as is a left-handed FO. And keeping the cockpit door is by far the best way of assuring safety.

In fact, having armed pilots could even compromise safety. The terrorists could start slashing stews, and an armed pilot would feel bound to protect her. It would be hard for a lot of men to be armed and do nothing when a woman they knew and/or cared about was being slashed to death. Terrorists could exploit this. Once a pilot is out of the cockpit, things go away fast.

I think the airplanes need another door, just behind the lav entrance. The food cart barricade is just not as good as a good solid door. And only cockpit crew would have keys or control of latches.

Or just give the pilots Gatorade bottles and tell them to stay in the cockpit. Or relief tubes.

.

Regarding the people throwing the bags, $10.00 an hour is way more than they are worth.

Apparently, was stands for "windup artist $%#@%&$%"

As i said, pilots should not be paid anymore than the F/A's. That was in my first post. The F/A's work a heck of a lot harder than they do. All a pilot does is sit there and enters info on a computer when told to.
