Possibility of new routes to the Middle East (i.e DXB) from CLT/DFW

Parker and Kirby are stated they are adding International destinations from CLT, this next summer schedule adds new cities in Europe from CLT.
True.   Last October, US announced the new CLT flights to BCN (A330), LIS (757), BRU (762) and MAN (757).    Given that the merger was not a certainty at that time, US management was proceeding as if the merger might not happen.

If those flights had been announced prior to the DOJ filing its lawsuit in August, then those new flights would look more like sure-things.   And since they're short-term summer additions, perhaps all four will be flown this year in a show of good faith by US.   But I wouldn't count on them continuing in the future.

What a lot of people don't seem to realize is that US did not just decide to "give" CLT international services to the extent they had, but because PHL was physically and air traffic wise (near) maxed out during TA bank departure/arrival (less so) periods. CLT is/was mostly a PHL (international) reliever and it worked extremely well. Now with the merger, the PHL-CLT international relationship will likely move to JFK/PHL. As far as QR is concerned, they have super deep pockets and can potentially speculate much longer on new route losses, than can any U.S. carrier. That said, the financial success of the PHL-DOH flight, as will many of their new U.S. routes, depend on feeder traffic from AA.  I'd bet that if QR established a JV type relationship  (profit/loss sharing) with AA/BA/IB, or even with just BA, they'd grab the available LHR-PHL slot pair in a moment.

QR's done quite well up until now without AA and oneworld. The added traffic they're getting thanks to oneworld is gravy, but keep in mind that the traffic they're carrying isn't going to or coming from DOH. It's going over DOH.

It's also not a matter of them having deep pockets to sustain losses, but a combination of significantly lower labor costs, and higher revenue premiums because they provide far superior service than anything you'll find on a North American or European airline.

In my opinion, the reason they're in the alliance is to "tick the box" just like the Chinese carriers, who are at the exact opposite end of the spectrum on revenue, but even lower in terms of labor costs. It also gives them a degree of differentiation from Etihad and Emirates, who out-carry QR in volume, but also tend to get slightly lower revenue premiums because both EK and EY are operating larger gauge aircraft (thus need to fill more seats...).

The chances of a Middle East airline engaging in a joint venture with a US airline are very low.

They have little reason to share revenue which they are going to take anyway.

And despite AA's fascination with the Middle East carriers, they are direct competition to BA and the European flags...and the ME carriers have been sucking passengers out of European airports and will do so far faster than they will from US airlines - solely on the basis of geography.

I just think that CLT needs to have direct flights to DXB and others to compete with ATL and IAD. IAD and ATL both have NS flights to the ME. CLT is the most powerful airport in the middle of the two. Thats why i think DXB makes sense to add as both have DXB on DL and UA. AA wants to be a powerful airline, they better make some fast moves. You dont want QR to come to town and steal pax when you can do the same on your own planes.

Robbed, I do not dislike American Airlines. I dislike US/USAIR/US Airways and for good reason.

I'm cautiously optimistic that the US leadership doesn't screw this up. Needless to say I'd rather no merger. I just worry about setting foot on the US aircraft once they start serving the AA routes as they are in pretty poor condition, uncomfortable seats and lack in-seat power among other things.

Josh,

Let's go through my first set of flights on AA since the merger.  First flight canceled LGA to ORD - so I got up at 3:30 AM to get to LGA to catch a 6 ish flight to ORD.  Connected to AA 289 in First Class 777 to PVG - flight boarded pushed back towed to gate - canceled for mechanical.  Paid over $11k for ticket - AA thought it was fine to send me in coach to PVG on BA.  Got myself re-routed in business class on another airline.  Bags - showed up 5 days later - never left ORD for 4 days.  When calling AA - they could not tell me anything about my bags - I missed US system that tracks your bag at every step of the way.

So my first two flights on AA - were a disaster.

Flew AA first class PEK to ORD this past week - Seats were old and worn out - ripped up - did not have normal power outlets like US and all other major airlines - you had to ask for an adaptor and I had to share it with other passengers - which is crazy - IFE system was ancient, associate was in Business Class - seats were uncomfortable compared to US business class product.

Service on board was outstanding - bedding, food selection, service and attentiion of FA's, etc - especially ordering meal before departure - really nice feature

Now let's talk web site - go to AA and look up any city pair schedule - assume you change your mind and want to fly to a different city - how many steps do you have to go through to look up your new city pair - do the same thing on US - see how easy it is to stay on one screen and check schedules - reverse cities, etc

So I know you think AA is better across the board it isn't.  AA has many great things - US does as well - let's be a bit more respectful - otherwise your comments are meaningless to the masses as your distain colors your opinions.

Take care

US Airways fleet is younger than AA's.

Oh thats right I forgot you are an aviation maintenance inspection expert besides a route planning marketing guru.

We all forgot you know more than anyone about Airlines and Airplanes, sitting in your office in BOS or MIA.

Josh,

The best thing you could do is not fly AA, then you will not have any complaints about their service... To me that seems like a fairly simple solution..
