PIT NONREV

Well I hope everyone can make to work ontime....I always gave my self 1 or 2 day to get to work from Domestic travel. International I gave my self a week to get to work... Planed is everything.......

There are only two kinds of People living in PIT, those that move away at 18 and never look back and those that will never leave. There is a lot of the latter hence the large number of commuters. 🙄

Why is making a life for yourself in Pittsburgh a bad thing? I hate when people ask me if I am considering leaving. Do you ask that person who lives in Alaska and commutes to PHL the same question?? I like living here. And if I decided to move it wouldn't be based on where US Airways has a hub.

I would point out to those reading this thread to consider the flare up on the Flight Attndant thread. This thread scratches the surface of life out East in PIT and why F/A's are so concerned over the "mee-too" clause and pilots so concerned over PBS or Preferential Bidding systems.

If, under rules we somewhat understand, commuting is so hard that it gets its own thread on a web board, why on earth would we want to give our lives to a scheduling system that takes away any empoloyee input and puts a very shaky computer program in charge of our lives?

The company has a huge sales job ahead to get East flight crews, front and back, to abandon what has been the status quo for years. It has been stated that 25%to 30% of West F/A's commute. PIT alone was at one time larger than AWA ever was. Now eveyone moves away or commutes.

This is a major issue and the company is not addressing it in any type of effective manner that I can see.

There is a lot to be said for living in a place where you own your house outright, instead of owing more on it than it is worth.

Not to mention living in one of the most livable cities in America.

Yes, it's a very livable, clean city with low crime. Great sports teams. Good culture. A nice part of PA that many people don't realize. Top notch Universities and a relatively low cost of living. And finally a downtown that is coming to life after about many years of just being a 9 to 5 destination for commuters. People are actually buying condos and living/going out in the city.

But none of that will bring any huge frequency of flights back. It's still not a destination city unless you are a business traveller going to work or a convention. It has it's share of corporations who need to travel, but apparently not enough to keep more nonstop flights.

The company not going add fly for commuting...they only add flt if all of those flt are FULL with Revenue Passenger (High Class/fares) not for NONREV and commuting....

To give you a few reasons why Kpit will never again be a hub for anyone.

1. $15 plus dollars per passanger boarded.

2. Cost per sq. ft. $ 30 plus a year for boarding areas etc.

You nailed the problem! 20 more seats per flight and we wouldn't be having this conversation. And this is not just about PIT...every employee should realize that their non-rev 'travel benefits' aren't worth anything, because you can't use them. Tell prospective employees to go to work for Delta, at least they have big airplanes and are not afraid to use them.
The crux of the issue is that the company doesn't care about the commuters. Actually it is fairly obvious that the company does not care about their employees at all. They have been told they are 'cost items', not human beings.
The company could care less about you - that is the prime directive every employee should have engraved on the back of their eyelids.
The truly frustrating thing is that when the co. closed PIT, they knew they'd have 1400 commuters and they gave that zero consideration, putting all the responsibility on the backs of the employees. Then they downsized aircraft and reduced frequency. Oh, by the way, all in a down real estate market - with no provisions for house purchase or moving expenses. Sheesh.

My theory would have been that WN finally got fed up with the US antics and decided to boot out nonrevs.

Yeah, but a bad theory and totally pulled straight from downunder. People have been behaving lately.
SW emps are grateful for US hauling them back and forth to work, too you know...

Not exactly true. The Company may indeed NOT have provisions to purchase your home (and Why should they?) but they would be required to pay for Moving Expenses should You decide to relocate to another Base. There have been MANY displacements over the years and many individuals HAVE picked up and Moved to a new location. PIT is a unique situation.......Once upon a Time, a Very Large Base of Operations....employees that are very established in the area with family and friends ("It's 'burgh thing") and unwilling to leave Western PA under any circumstance. So, now You have the Commuter Issue. Packing Up and Relocating for ANY Company is a BIG DECISION to make for most people- Packing Up and Relocating for A-N-Y airline and certainly US is questionable at best. The PIT debacle (closing a Hub at one of the Best airports in the World ) is as much a Company Issue as a Stupid Factor with local politicians who REFUSED to provide any assistance/incentive for the airline to stay there. When US pulled their stunt of vacating their leases right before the deadline.......it was a classic chess match.........US basically told PIT to 'keep Your airport, We'll Go elsewhere"........and that they did. Now, a multitude of people past and present have to live with it. The current Management cuts at PIT are indeed a little excessive though..........it's not like no one lives there anymore.

The fact that nobody has rushed in to replace the lost flights shows that there really isn't much of a market there.

Although no carrier has moved to make PIT a hub, the double digit growth in passengers the other carriers have been seeing is filling the void left by US quite nicely. US handed them that traffic on a silver platter.

Very True. All one has to do is check out the Airport Parking Lots. Over the years, Employee lots were moved back Further and Further to accomodate giving space to Customer Parking and even after the US pulldown and dismantling of the Hub, the lots REMAIN FULL. Sure the STEELER'S are One of the Marquee Franchises in Sports but they sure as hell don't park at the airport and Tailgate in those lots..........so the traffic is obviously coming from somewhere. Why US turned over flying PIT to LAX and SFO to United is still a topic of discussion. It is NOT like United had much of a presence in Pittsburgh to begin with. The traffic US handed over in PIT was MORE than on a Silver Platter......it was a Mobile Buffet they pushed away. ANOTHER S-t-u-p-i-d decision made by some Master Magician of the Airline World. (When You sit back and look at all the BS that transpires, You have to wonder "WTF were they thinking?". 🙄

Let's add the third kind of person: the one like my friend who had to relocate to PIT or face unemployment! She really doesn't want to be there as the locals are very hostile if you don't want to wear black and gold (she's a Ravens fan) and hates the brutal winters! Not to mention the fact that the only question her neighbors ever ask her are when she's going to have kids, as if a woman in her 30s can't be single and happy!

To keep on topic though, I find visiting her easy through routing via DCA and sometimes RDU! It doesn't hurt to know some friends at "Citrus" who can give passes direct from TPA to PIT as well!
