It was a jewel of an idea.
Three American Airlines baggage handlers in California ransacked the same jewelry-filled suitcase that had already been looted at Kennedy Airport, police said.
The trio then planned to have someone pose as the owner of the suitcase and spirit the remaining baubles out of San Francisco International Airport.
The bling-hungry handlers were rounded up Thursday on charges of stealing the bag on Aug. 25 and trying to pawn the gems.
The West Coast crew had no idea the bag of Manhattan jeweler David Diamond had already been partially emptied of $280,000 in diamonds and gold that morning at JFK, cops said.
American Airlines workers Angelo Riviello, 38, of Queens, and Albert Acevedo, 47, of Brooklyn, have been charged in the JFK theft. They face up to 15 years in prison if convicted, said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.
Workers for an American subcontractor, Air Serv, noticed the abandoned bag when it arrived in San Francisco after being rerouted from Los Angeles, authorities said.
Three workers - May Frances Escario, 22, Sula Fafotu, 24, and Roberto Lopez, 27 - allegedly hatched a plan over Labor Day weekend to have someone pose as Diamond and claim the bag before the real Diamond could.
Escario's boyfriend, Nestor Reyes, 33, was nabbed the next morning wheeling the bag out of the apartment they shared - still containing $210,000 worth of jewels, authorities said.
The team was charged with grand theft and embezzlement.

Idiots.

They make all of us in this industry look bad.

Having said that, I have to question the sanity of a man that checks 280K worth of anything. Theft aside, there's just too much that can wrong from point A to point B.

SFO baggage handlers are AirServ? I thought SFO was too big to be outsourced.

Not only that, but the man also paid $15.00 for the privilege of having his bag ransacked.

THREAD TITLE: Oh these baggage handlers and thier bling!

DARN! I thought the thread was going to be fashion commentary with pictures. :)

We've got a guy who makes Mr T look Amish.

The diamond business is amazing in how the goods are transported.

This smells. Why would anyone do that!?!?@ Perhaps a larger insurance scam that involves more people... Perhaps Mr. Diamond "expected" them to be stolen.....

Transporting diamonds and other jewelry in baggage happens pretty frequently to keep their costs down....

Manhattan jeweler David Diamond

You gotta love a jeweler who's name is Dave Diamond...That's rich..

I understand *why* it happens, but that still doesn't make it an intelligent move. I'd think with 280K on the line, a few extra bucks to insure the whole lot made it would be worth it...

Perhaps. Again, not something I'd do, but it's pretty common on the BRU-JFK flights....

The capitalist system promotes criminality. Part of the dumbed down educatation agenda is to inculcate materialism and consumerism. Gotta have what you can't afford; by hook or crook.
If these bling takers had MBA after their names they would be praised for their entrepreneurial acumen.

When I retire, I will be free to move just about anywhere.

I would like to live where criminality is not promoted or even present.

Any suggestions?
