Great to hear about this new service from LAS.
Hope we will see new service from LAS to other cities as well. LAS-BDL,PVD,ROC,YYZ and YUL would be nice.

US West already flies LAS-YYZ.

How does this route demonstrate a synergy? They were able to serve several east coast and southern cities before the merger. Thoughts?

Previous management had a map they used for route planning that ended at the Mississippi River. When they moved to Tempe they brought it along and guess what? They found that it had been folded in half and there were all kinds of places to fly west of the Big River.

I would think this flight would be on EAST metal. Wasn't there something a few months ago about a WEST Airbus going to do a PHX-CLT route due to an out of service in PHX, but had to scrap it at the last minute because CLT was not in the HP charts (excuse my term if it's in correct)? I would think BNA would be the same situation, where there was minimal chart info to use it as a diversion or charter city, but not for scheduled ops.

Recently, a friend of mine and his wife traveled from their home in Northern Massachusetts (just south of the New Hampshire border) to PHX to visit their son.

Although they live about 20 minutes from MHT and 40 minutes from BOS, they actually drove all the way to PVD to fly on -- you guessed it! -- Southwest. Non-stop. PVD to PHX. (They have two round-trips a day.)

Now that US Airways has a hub in PHX, and a much larger operation in LAS, would it not make sense to offer more non-stops to more northeast airports -- with connections through those western cities to the West Coast and the Northwest US/Canada -- than to misconnect those passengers (while losing their bags) in PHL?

For example, the existing one daily round-trip between BDL and PHX on West metal is a good first step.

Currently, there are no non-stops from MHT to PHX (although Southwest has one daily non-stop MHT-LAS). Anybody who thinks MHT is a small-town airport should look at the population area within an hour of that airport.

Add to that the unbelievable hassles the Big Dig disaster is causing people trying to get to and from Logan Airport, and MHT and PVD would appear to markets worth exploring further for non-stop westbounds.

I think that's exactly what they've announced. They say they were losing money on true transcons, so they are going to reduce transcons to select hubs and focus cities to serve those markets' respective O and D demand (not connections) and connect more east cities to PHX and LAS for connections to true west coast cities.

OTOH, AmWest has made a big deal about super selective competition with WN.

East/West, whats the diff.
I think its a great route, and hope it does well.
Even if it is East metal, its still a new destination for our west coast fliers.
We fly the entire West Coast into Vegas every night, and disperse them to former HP East Coast destinations.
I don't think they give a **** about which ticket the plane and crew is on.
Just another new destination for them.
Next year after the tickets merge, it won't really matter.
It makes sense to give new flying to East anyway, since that way we can get FAs and piolts recalled.
More flying for West means we need to keep hiring.
While I personally hate to see all the new flying go to East (for selfish reasons), it makes the most sense.
And, again, after the tickets merge, it won't matter anyway.
