IAM M&R CONTRACT UPDATE AUG-2013

IAM didn't support the merger? Possibly, but this letter states that they DID!

We are proud to have supported a merger which created the largest airline in the world.

The IAM has historically experienced at net loss in dues payers from mergers:

DL-NW
AA-TW
UA-CO

Understandable why they are bitter about it. Plenty of other reasons not to support this USeless merger, but the IAM losing dues payers isn't one of them. Without being privy to the closely guarded financial terms of the alliance agreement, it is unclear if the dues flow will be impacted or not.

Let's not forget about CHAOS too.  Works wonders.  Good luck to you guys and gals...
what CHAOS does is succeed at sending customers who are only interested in getting to their destinations with reliability instead to competitors.

There is abundant evidence of how union activity has impacted airline finances in the US and how it makes it that much harder to gain something at the negotiating table.

yes, good luck.

CHAOS is a well proven method, and ever think that a company actually wanted to settle a CBA, they would avoid the threat of a strike

Since you never were a union member nor on the negotiating committee nor worked under a CBA, you are truly clueless on the matter.

The RLA protects the company, not the union.

The IAM fully supported the merger.  They told us they didn't, but they did all along.  Typical, say one thing but do another with management.  This letter confirms it.

That's kinda the whole point. That fear of (potential) loss is exactly what makes a CHAOS strategy an effective one.

The good news is that there's an easy way to avoid all of that messiness in the first place; all it takes is bargaining in good faith.

Tim,
To your knowledge will the alliance leave the IAM dues neutral or will they have a net gain/loss? Of course the financial terms weren't disclosed to the membership.

The question is, getting close to what? I thought they said that they were close around the time the IBT ran a campaign.

Membership observers are where membership mechanics are allowed to sit in (actually, behind) the union members NC, National Officers, and all attorneys, and watch the actual contract nego's take place live.  It really is a great thing to do as the NC is always under watchful eyes during nego's.
And no Chuck, IAM does not allow membership observers.  AMFA is the only union out there that does, and trust me it works very well...
