Well first off NO ONE regardless of status is upgrading 2 weeks out. For a CP it is ONE week, Gold 3 days, Silver 1 day. In the interim ALL open F seats are available for sale.

The problem isn't availablity per se, it's product differentiation/valuation that is the open issue. The Airlines have inadvertantly painted themselves into a bit of a corner.

Cheap fares can only be upgraded in advance (up to 7 days for CP, 5, for GP, 3 for SP) if there is a lot of excess inventory -- and only a portion of that inventory is released. The remainder is held for sale. That's why we have "the gate dance". They release those seats because they know, with a great deal of confidence, that they are not going to be sold.

Using 20,000 miles (US20) on the cheap fares lets you upgrade right away if the
inventory is available.

If you book a month or two in advance, chances are good you'll get it.

BTW, It's still 7/3/1 for the status upgrades. Not 7/5/3.

As a neutral if not totally disinterested observer, let me provide you a few real-world facts. L4P:

1. I've had dinner at KC's home. He has a really nice place in southern Johnson County, KS. But he's just one person. He has no alter egos or substitute screen names.

2. USAirways and Southwest were always his two favorite airlines, except during his teenage years (you know how it is when you are 16 and know everything) when he was a big Braniff fan.

3. He is a bigtime expert on Rapid Rewards. I don't think he collects as many tickets from the mailbox as I do, but he does okay.

4. When he gives you his opinion---it's just that---an opinion. He perspective is that of a successful businessman who buys airplane tickets and expects a modicum of value for what he's spent, nothing more, nothing less. I would suggest, though, that the opinions of observers from outside the industry could not make a bigger mess of U's fare structure than it is already. In fact, I imagine you could hire a homeless person from the street corner, make them director of yield management, and things would not be worse than they already are.

5. I'm the radical theorist of the group....if it were left up to me, I'd rip out all the F seats.....and sell every seat on the plane for the same price. One fare for before 7 pm, and another fare for after 7 pm and on weekends.

6. But don't be mean or hateful to KC....even though he is a fan of (depending upon who you listen to) the turd brown bus, WalMart of the skies, Greyhound of the skies, airline for the dispossessed, or WN.......he is not anti-US in any way, shape, or form.

I think that the people who can really afford 1st class have left the airlines to go to the fractionals.

They can get whatever they want to eat.
And they no longer have to suffer the humiliation of standing in public without shoes while they spread their legs and thrust their hands into the air while being frisked by The Sax Affenders (TSA).

Exactly as I thought. You can be proven wrong time and time again, but when proven wrong beyond a doubt over something as juvenile as the language on an avatar (which started as joke and a jab), you simply can not admit it.

But I'll tell you what. Since ELP has suggested that your an ok guy and in a non-offense way, I'm going to just let it die this time. I will how ever continue to challenge you every time you make a statement about US or DM program or upgrades that has no basis in fact. I do in fact enjoy the banter with you and I'm sure an another opportunity will present itself in the near future.
