BTW. There is a fairly often discussed scenario that is discussed during initial screening. Suffice it to say that should a major disturbance occur in the terminal, or other public area, the TSA expects an FFDO to utilize his/her weapon if necessary to save lives.
In such a case, which unfortunately, is by no means unlikely over time; I'd certainly prefer that you/any/all FFDO's have immediate access to your weapons, without the need for "going into the luggage".
The TSA does have considerable lattitude in it's affairs, and establishing more sensible carrying regulations shouldn't prove any large legal issue.
We've sadly now seen a serious incident. It's far past time to re-think the established methodology.
From 700's posted link: ""It's clearly a minor incident, but I think it's endemic of potentially larger problems," said Stuart Klaskin at KKC aviation consulting.
Pilots, in particular, have enough to think about during a flight without worrying about keeping their weapons safe."
I fully agree with that last. I don't ever recall any concerns from my USAF time about "keeping their weapons safe" though, since said weapons were "worn" securely, and not messed around with via all the "lockbox"/holster/in/out/etc insanity.
